Like other neglected diseases, surveillance data for rabies is insufficient and incompatible with the need to accurately describe the burden of disease. Multiple modeling studies central to estimating global human rabies deaths have been conducted in the last two decades, with results ranging from 14,000 to 74,000 deaths annually. Yet, uncertainty in model parameters, inconsistency in modeling approaches, and discrepancies in data quality per country included in global burden studies have led to recent skepticism about the magnitude of rabies mortality.

Article Synopsis
  • Cholera, caused by a Gram-negative bacterium, is a significant public health issue with millions of annual cases, primarily linked to the ongoing seventh pandemic El Tor (7PET) lineage.
  • Research involving 34 bacterial isolates from travelers returning to Australia revealed that most belonged to non-7PET lineages, which still demonstrated antibiotic resistance and virulence factors.
  • The study highlights how travel impacts the spread of both epidemic and non-epidemic cholera strains, emphasizing the importance of surveillance in understanding and monitoring disease diversity and transmission.

Review of pharmacogenomics of psychiatric comorbidities in autism spectrum disorder.

Pharmacogenomics

September 2023

Research Laboratory Unit, Fundació Docència i Recerca Mútua Terrassa, Spain.

Approximately 70% of individuals diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) receive at least one psychotropic medication to treat comorbidities. However, the response to treatment with these drugs is far from satisfactory, with 30-50% of treated patients not responding adequately or developing severe and long-lasting side effects. There is strong evidence of the clinical utility of pharmacogenetics for the personalization of antipsychotic and antidepressant treatments in adult populations.

Spontaneous hematoma of the iliopsoas is a rare pathological circumstance; in the majority of cases published in the literature, it is associated with disorders of hemostasis due to anticoagulant treatment or coagulopathies. We present a case of a 64-year-old man on acenocoumarol, an anticoagulant of the vitamin K antagonist family, for atrial fibrillation, who presented with a severe left hip and flank pain with a huge ecchymosis on the left flank and a partial inability to extend the left thigh. A CT scan confirmed the diagnosis of iliopsoas hematoma.
