Published: October 2024

Background: Irisin was found to correlate with coronary artery disease (CAD) in diabetic patients. This study investigated the association of irisin and (SNP rs3480) with the presence and severity of CAD in T2DM.

Methods: This cross-sectional study included 100 patients with T2DM divided into two groups, DM group ( = 50), including patients without CAD and CAD group ( = 50), including those confirmed to have CAD by coronary angiography. Irisin was measured. SNP rs3480 genotyping of was done.

Results: Irisin levels were significantly lower in the CAD group ( < 0.001). The CAD group had significantly higher HbA1c and lower HDL ( < 0.001). Patients with controlled DM had significantly higher irisin levels ( < 0.001). single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs3480 was not associated with irisin levels, and the rs3480 AA reference allele was significantly associated with significant CAD.

Conclusion: Irisin appears to be protective against developing CAD in diabetic patients. Irisin level was an independent predictor of significant CAD in diabetic patients combined with the rs3480 genotype.

Clinical Trial Registration Number: NCT04957823.

Keyhole decompression surgery for holospinal epidural abscess: a novel approach for spinal stability preservation.

Eur Spine J

January 2025

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Graduate School of Medicine, Chiba University, 1-8-1 Inohana, Chuo-ku, Chiba, 260-8670, Japan.

Purpose: Spinal epidural abscesses are rare yet serious conditions, often necessitating emergency surgical intervention. Holospinal epidural abscesses (HEA) extending from the cervical to the lumbosacral spine are even rarer and present significant challenges in management. This report aims to describe a case of HEA with both ventrally-located cervical and dorsally-located thoracolumbar epidural abscesses treated with a combination of anterior keyhole decompression and posterior skip decompression surgeries.

To investigate the fertility status, pregnancy outcomes, and disease activity during and after pregnancy in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) currently being followed up at an adult rheumatology clinic. This study included 141 adult patients diagnosed with according to the International League of Associations for Rheumatology criteria, who are now monitored at an adult rheumatology clinic. Data on demographics, disease characteristics, medication history, fertility status, and pregnancy outcomes were collected through medical records and patient interviews.

Patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus(T2DM) typically have an average or higher bone mineral density (BMD) but are at a significantly higher risk of fracture than patients without diabetes. Trabecular bone score (TBS) is a textural index derived from pixel gray-level variations in lumbar spine DXA image, which has been introduced as an indirect measure of bone quality. This study aimed to discuss the trends and annual rates of change in BMD and TBS with age in Chinese men with T2DM and men without diabetes mellitus.

Relationships between adrenal insufficiency and cardiovascular outcomes in patients with congestive heart failure.

Nutr Metab Cardiovasc Dis

December 2024

Diabetes and Endocrinology, Department of Internal Medicine, Hennepin Healthcare, Minneapolis, MN, USA.

Background And Aims: Patients with adrenal insufficiency (AI) face elevated risks during various hospitalizations including cardiovascular related admissions. Despite this, limited data exist specifically regarding congestive heart failure (CHF) in the context of AI. This investigation leveraged a comprehensive national database to examine the association between AI and cardiovascular outcomes among patients admitted with CHF.

Introduction: The aim of this study was to assess the long-term impact and potential effectiveness of our specialized acellular dermal matrix (ADM) in a two-stage breast reconstruction process.

Objective: Opinions regarding the use of ADMs are currently divided. While their positive contribution to reconstructive breast surgery is evident, the results of studies vary depending on specific procedures, patient selection, and techniques employed.
