The chemical reactions that formed the building blocks of life at origins required catalysts, whereby the nature of those catalysts influenced the type of products that accumulated. Recent investigations have shown that at 100 °C awaruite, a NiFe alloy that naturally occurs in serpentinizing systems, is an efficient catalyst for CO conversion to formate, acetate, and pyruvate. These products are identical with the intermediates and products of the acetyl-CoA pathway, the most ancient CO fixation pathway and the backbone of carbon metabolism in H-dependent autotrophic microbes. Here, we show that NiFe nanoparticles prepared via the hard-templating method catalyze the conversion of H and CO to formate, acetate and pyruvate at 25 °C under 25 bar. Furthermore, the C-labeled pyruvate can be further converted to acetate, parapyruvate, and citramalate over Ni, Fe, and NiFe nanoparticles at room temperature within one hour. These findings strongly suggest that awaruite can catalyze both the formation of citramalate, the C5 product of pyruvate condensation with acetyl-CoA in microbial carbon metabolism, from pyruvate and the formation of pyruvate from CO at very moderate reaction conditions without organic catalysts. These results align well with theories for an autotrophic origin of microbial metabolism under hydrothermal vent conditions.

Covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) are emerging as promising platform for photocatalysis, yet their highly symmetric structure leads to significant charge recombination. Herein, we employed a facile non-metallic boron (B) modification with precisely controlled doping site to introduce asymmetric local electron distribution in CTFs, achieving a 15-fold activity enhancement for CO-to-CH conversion. Calculations including frontier orbitals, dipole moments and molecular electrostatic potentials firmly demonstrated the formation of localized polarized electron regions in CTF-1 via B doping.

The self-shading of photosynthetic cells throughout the reaction volume, along with the need for extended light paths, limits adequate light supply and significantly restricts the potential for upscaling. Here, we present a flat panel photobioreactor (1 cm optical path length) as a scalable system to provide efficient illumination at high cell densities.

We propose an effective method for selectively extracting the valuable metals from the spent LiNiCoMnO cathode material using an oxalic acid-based deep eutectic solvent. Through regulation of the coordination environment, NiO, CoO, and MnO are stepwise separated and further applied in the electrochemical conversion of raw PET bottles to high-purity formic acid.

Electrochemical glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) presents a promising approach for converting excess glycerol (GLY) into high-value-added products. However, the complex mechanism and the challenge of achieving selectivity for diverse products make GOR difficult to address in both experimental and theoretical studies. In this work, three nitrogen-doped graphene-supported copper single-atom catalysts (CuN@Gra SACs, x = 2-4) were selected as the model system due to their simple structure, excellent conductivity and high structural stability.

Growing atmospheric CO concentrations are a global concern and a primary factor contributing to global warming. Development of integrated CO capture and conversion protocols is necessary to mitigate this alarming challenge. Though CO hydrogenation to produce formic acid and methanol has seen many strides in the past decades, most studies utilize pure CO for this transformation.
