Article Synopsis
  • Protothecosis, a rare subcutaneous infection caused by Prototheca wicherhamii, often goes misdiagnosed and lacks a standardized treatment; combined oral itraconazole and 5-aminolevulinic acid photodynamic therapy (ALA-PDT) has been explored for therapy.* -
  • The study examined the effects of different ALA concentrations and light doses on inhibiting P. wickerhamii growth and utilized transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to observe cellular changes, confirming ALA-PDT disrupts the cell structure of the fungus.* -
  • Treatment of a patient showed that the combined therapy was effective over a 9-week period, with ALA-PDT enhancing the effectiveness of itraconazole

Article Synopsis
  • Darier disease and Hailey-Hailey disease are rare skin conditions that can make life tough for people who have them, and there are no effective long-term treatments available right now.
  • Doctors often use oral and topical retinoids to help manage symptoms, but these can have bad side effects that make it hard for patients to stick with treatment.
  • A study looked into a new treatment called photodynamic therapy (PDT), which showed promise in helping with symptoms, but more research is needed to fully understand its benefits, costs, and safety for everyone.

Enhancing Therapeutic Approaches in Glioblastoma with Pro-Oxidant Treatments and Synergistic Combinations: In Vitro Experience of Doxorubicin and Photodynamic Therapy.

Int J Mol Sci

July 2024

Departamento de Biología Molecular, Facultad de Ciencias Exactas, Fisicoquímicas y Naturales, Universidad Nacional de Rio Cuarto, Rio Cuarto X5800BIA, Argentina.

Glioblastoma (GBM) is an aggressive brain cancer characterized by significant molecular and cellular heterogeneity, which complicates treatment efforts. Current standard therapies, including surgical resection, radiation, and temozolomide (TMZ) chemotherapy, often fail to achieve long-term remission due to tumor recurrence and resistance. A pro-oxidant environment is involved in glioma progression, with oxidative stress contributing to the genetic instability that leads to gliomagenesis.

Breast cancer remains a formidable challenge in oncology despite significant advancements in treatment modalities. Conventional therapies such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and hormonal therapy have been the mainstay in managing breast cancer for decades. However, a subset of patient's experiences treatment failure, leading to disease recurrence and progression.

Purpose: To evaluate the efficacy of Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) combined with photodynamic therapy (PDT) in treating non-invasive extramammary Paget's disease (EMPD).

Materials And Methods: A 77-year-old male patient with non-invasive EMPD was treated with MMS followed by PDT. Preoperative fluorescence localization using 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) was performed to determine the surgical scope.
