We introduce a new codification on a time series that combines permutations and another symbol containing quantitative information. With these new codes, we construct a new test to determine whether a time series is independent and identically distributed. We compare our results with those obtained with tests based only on permutations. Our results show that the new test produces better results than those based only on permutations.

Up to 45% of patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience impulse control disorders (ICDs), characterized by a loss of voluntary control over impulses, drives or temptations. This study aimed to investigate whether previously identified genetic and psychiatric risk factors interact towards the development of ICDs in PD. A total of 278 de novo PD patients (ICD-free at enrollment) were selected from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative database.

Equid alphaherpesvirus 4 (EqAHV4; , ; equine rhinopneumonitis virus) has seldom been associated with complications such as abortion and myeloencephalopathy, given the low tendency of this virus to induce viremia. We investigated the frequency of EqAHV4 viremia in horses with fever and respiratory signs. Case selection included all equids with EqAHV4 quantitative real-time PCR (qPCR)-positive nasal secretions (defined as EqAHV4 qPCR-positive cases) submitted to a diagnostic laboratory.

Avascular necrosis in pediatric rheumatic diseases: an Italian retrospective multicentre study.

Ital J Pediatr

January 2025

Pediatric Immuno-Rheumatology Unit, Fondazione IRCCS Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Milan, Italy.

Background: Atraumatic avascular necrosis (AVN) is a severe condition that may complicate the course of rheumatic diseases and contribute to long-term damage. However, there is a lack of evidence on this rare event in pediatric rheumatology. The aim of our study was to evaluate the occurrence of avascular necrosis in the context of rheumatologic diseases in Italy and to describe the main demographic and clinical features of AVN patients, with a particular focus on treatment background.

Background: Dengue fever (DF) poses a growing global threat, necessitating a comprehensive one-health approach to address its complex interplay between human, animal, and environmental factors. In Oyo State, Nigeria, the true burden of DF remains unknown due to underdiagnosis and misdiagnosis as malaria, exacerbated by poor health-seeking behavior, weak surveillance systems, and inadequate health infrastructure. Adopting a one-health approach is crucial to understanding the dynamics of DF transmission.

Background: This study aimed to investigate the major predictive factors associated with prolonged mechanical ventilation(PMV) following cardiac surgery.

Methods: This retrospective, cross-sectional, descriptive-analytical study was conducted from September 2021 to March 2022, involving 244 patients who underwent cardiac surgery. PMV was defined as mechanical ventilation for more than 24 h.
