We report experimental observation of subharmonic mode excitation in primary Kerr optical frequency combs generated using crystalline whispering-gallery mode resonators. We show that the subcombs can be controlled and span a single or multiple free spectral ranges around the primary comb modes. In the spatial domain, the resulting multiscale combs correspond to an amplitude modulation of intracavity roll patterns. We perform a theoretical analysis based on eigenvalue decomposition that evidences the mechanism leading to the excitation of these combs.

This study experimentally investigates the role of cavitation-induced shock waves in initiating and destabilizing capillary (surface) waves on a droplet surface, preceding atomization. Acoustic emissions and interfacial wave dynamics were simultaneously monitored in droplets of different liquids (water, isopropyl alcohol and glycerol), using a calibrated fiber-optic hydrophone and high-speed imaging. Spectral analysis of the hydrophone data revealed distinct subharmonic frequency peaks in the acoustic spectrum correlated with the wavelength of capillary waves, which were optically captured during the onset of atomization from the repetitive imploding bubbles.

Previous researchers have conducted extensive investigations on the impact of various working conditions on fatigue damage. However, further research is still needed to understand the underlying mechanism of how the excitation frequency of cyclic loading affects the fatigue life. This article systematically discloses the phononic origin of atomic scale fatigue resonance, focusing on single-layer molybdenum disulfide (SL MoS) as a prototypical material.

We consider instability and localized patterns arising from the long-wave-short-wave resonance in the nonintegrable regime numerically. We study the stability and instability of elliptic-function periodic waves with respect to subharmonic perturbations, whose period is a multiple of the period of the elliptic waves. We thus find the modulational instability (MI) of the corresponding dnoidal waves.

This work investigates the primary and secondary resonances of an electrostatically excited double-clamped microbeam and its feasibility to be used for sensing applications. The sensor design can be excited directly in the vicinity of the primary and secondary resonances. This excitation mechanism would portray certain nonlinear phenomena and it would certainly lead in increasing the sensitivity of the device.

A kinetic theory is developed to describe the longitudinal decay of two-ion decay (TID): The pump ion-acoustic wave (IAW) decays into two daughter IAWs with a longer wavelength. The instability growth rate and threshold are given by the theory. Both the simulations of full kinetic Vlasov and hybrid Vlasov (kinetic ions and Boltzmann electrons) are employed to verify the theory and have a high quantitative agreement with the theory for 8≤ZT_{e}/T_{i}≤15, where Z is the ion charge number and T_{i}(T_{e}) is the ion (electron) temperature.
