We proposed a portable sample pretreatment microsystem, which can be automatically operated through speech recognition in a smartphone app. The proposed sample pretreatment microsystem consists of a microfluidic chip, an air router, pressure and vacuum lines with air pump motors, six 3-way solenoid valves, and a microcontroller with a Bluetooth module. The command of a human voice conducted the whole process of DNA extraction from pathogenic bacterial samples. Thus, manual interference during the DNA extraction is eliminated, preventing any potential infection from human touch. The palm-sized sample pretreatment microsystem can be run by a portable battery or a conventional smartphone charger. Genomic DNA ofwas purified on a chip in less than 1 min with an extraction efficiency of 70 ± 5%.

Use of intrauterine dextrose as an alternative to systemic antibiotics for treatment of clinical metritis in dairy cattle: a microbiome perspective.

Front Vet Sci

December 2024

Intergraduate Degree Program in Integrative and Biomedical Physiology, Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA, United States.

Introduction: Clinical metritis (CM) has significant costs to dairy producers. Current treatment strategy involves systemic antibiotics; however, there is increasing concern about judicious antibiotic use. The study objective was to evaluate the effects of a non-antibiotic treatment vs.

Disseminated tumor cells in bone marrow as predictive classifiers for small cell lung cancer patients.

J Natl Cancer Cent

December 2024

Department of Medical Oncology, Beijing Chest Hospital, Capital Medical University, Beijing Tuberculosis and Thoracic Tumor Research Institute, Beijing, China.

Background: Small cell lung cancer (SCLC) is a highly aggressive disease characterized by early metastasis. Aneuploid CD31 disseminated tumor cells (DTCs) and CD31 disseminated tumor endothelial cells (DTECs) residing in the bone marrow are generally considered as the initiators of metastatic process. However, the clinical significance of DTCs and DTECs in SCLC remains poorly understood.

Background: The use of enzymes within pig feed can reduce the challenges associated with antibiotic-free animal feeding. However, this enzymatic effect is often limited by the internal and external gut environment. This study aimed to improve diet quality and assess the impact of an enzymatically hydrolyzed diet (EHD) on growth performance, meat quality, and intestinal health in growing pigs.

Zinc pretreatment for protection against intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury.

World J Gastrointest Surg

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Organ Failure Research, Department of General Surgery, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Precision Medicine for Gastrointestinal Tumor, Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou 510515, Guangdong Province, China.

Background: Intestinal ischemiareperfusion (I/R) injury (II/RI) is a critical condition that results in oxidative stress, inflammation, and damage to multiple organs. Zinc, an essential trace element, offers protective benefits in several tissues during I/R injury, but its effects on intestinal II/RI remain unclear.

Aim: To investigate the effects of zinc pretreatment on II/RI and associated multiorgan damage.

Effective monitoring of veterinary drug residues in food is essential for legislation compliance and food safety, yet remains challenging due to low concentrations and complex matrices. This study introduced a miniaturized 96-well electromembrane extraction (EME) technique for pre-concentration and isolation 80 prohibited/restricted veterinary drugs from honey samples. Three liquid membranes were developed and characterized: V1 ("V" for veterinary), a mixture of 2-undecanone and 0.
