Article Synopsis
  • Acrylonitrile (AN) is an organic compound that can cause neurotoxicity, but the mechanism behind this is not fully understood; HIF-1α plays a crucial role in cellular response to low oxygen levels and may help with survival.
  • In lab studies, AN reduced the levels of HIF-1α and other proteins associated with cell survival and function, leading to mitochondrial damage and increased cell death.
  • Treatment that activates HIF-1α (like cobalt chloride) showed protective effects against neurotoxicity, suggesting that enhancing this pathway could be a potential strategy for mitigating the harmful effects of AN exposure.

Hypoxia-induced inflammation and apoptosis are important pathophysiological features of heat stroke-induced acute kidney injury (HS-AKI). Hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) is a key protein that regulates cell adaptation to hypoxia. HIF-prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor (HIF-PHI) stabilizes HIF to increase cell adaptation to hypoxia.

Objective: Hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) and its downstream factor, 19 kDa BCL-2 interacting protein 3 (BNIP3), promote cellular autophagy under hypoxic conditions. However, their roles in pulpitis are unclear. Therefore, the changes in inflammatory response and autophagy levels caused by hypoxia during pulpitis were evaluated.

B-cell lymphoma-2 and adenovirus E1B 19-kDa-interacting protein 3 (BNIP3) and BNIP3 like (BNIP3L or NIX) play a vital role in regulating mitophagy and the intrinsic apoptosis in mammals, but their gene characterizations remain unclear in fish. Herein, bnip3, nix1 and nix2 were isolated and characterized from grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idellus), which encode peptides of 194, 233 and 222 amino acids, respectively. As typical BH3-only proteins, grass carp BNIP3, NIX1 and NIX2 proteins contain BH3 and C-terminal transmembrane domains for inducing apoptosis.
