Probing Anion-Molecule Complexes of Atmospheric Relevance Using Anion Photoelectron Detachment Spectroscopy.

Bimolecular reaction and collision complexes that drive atmospheric chemistry and contribute to the absorption of solar radiation are fleeting and therefore inherently challenging to study experimentally. Furthermore, primary anions in the troposphere are short lived because of a complicated web of reactions and complex formation they undergo, making details of their early fate elusive. In this perspective, the experimental approach of photodetaching mass-selected anion-molecule complexes or complex anions, which prepares neutrals in various vibronic states, is surveyed. Specifically, the application of anion photoelectron spectroscopy along with photoelectron-photofragment coincidence spectroscopy toward the study of collision complexes, complex anions in which a partial covalent bond is formed, and radical bimolecular reaction complexes, with relevance in tropospheric chemistry, will be highlighted.

Water activation and splitting by single anionic iridium atoms.

Mass spectrometric analysis of anionic products that result from interacting Ir with HO shows the efficient generation of [Ir(HO)] complexes and IrO molecular anions. Anion photoelectron spectra of [Ir(HO)], formed under various source conditions, exhibit spectral features that are due to three different forms of the complex: the solvated anion-molecule complex, Ir(HO), as well as the intermediates, [H-Ir-OH] and [H-Ir-O], where one and two O-H bonds have been broken, respectively. The measured and calculated vertical detachment energy values are in good agreement and, thus, support identification of all three types of isomers.

To gain insight into complex ion-molecule reactions induced by MeV-energy heavy ion irradiation of condensed matter, we performed a mass spectrometric study of secondary ions emitted from methanol microdroplet surfaces by 2.0 MeV C. We observed positive and negative secondary ions, including fragments, clusters, and reaction products.

The environment enclosing an ionic species has a critical effect on its reactivity. In a more general sense, medium effects are not limited to the solvent, but involve the counter ion effect (ion pairing), formation of larger aggregates and structured environment as provided by the host in the case of host-guest complexes. In this review, a general view of the medium effect on anion-molecule reactions is presented.
