Published: January 2023

Earth's climate may be stabilized over millennia by solubilization of atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO) as minerals weather, but the temperature sensitivity of this thermostat is poorly understood. We discovered that the temperature dependence of weathering expressed as an activation energy increases from laboratory to watershed as transport, clay precipitation, disaggregation, and fracturing increasingly couple to dissolution. A simple upscaling to the global system indicates that the temperature dependence decreases to ~22 kilojoules per mole because (i) the lack of runoff limits weathering and retains base metal cations on half the land surface and (ii) other landscapes are regolith-shielded and show little weathering response to temperature. By comparing weathering from laboratory to globe, we reconcile some aspects of kinetic and thermodynamic controls on CO drawdown by natural or enhanced weathering.

Scaffolding and Heavy-Atom Effects of Metal Chains Enhanced Tunable Long Persistent Luminescence in Metal-Organic Frameworks.

Inorg Chem

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Chemical Additives for China National Light Industry, College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Shaanxi University of Science and Technology, Xi'an 710021, China.

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with long persistent luminescence (LPL) have attracted extensive research attention due to their potential applications in information encryption, anticounterfeiting technology, and security logic. The strategic combinations of organic phosphor linkers and metal ions lead to tremendous frameworks, which could unveil many undiscovered properties of organics. Here, the synthesis and characterization of a three-dimensional MOF (Cd-MOF) is reported, which demonstrates enhanced blue photoluminescence and a phosphorescent lifetime of 124 ms as compared to the pristine linker (HL) under ambient conditions due to the scaffolding and heavy-atom effects of metal chains in the framework.

Ecotoxicity of Biodegradable Microplastics and Bio-based Microplastics: A Review of in vitro and in vivo Studies.

Environ Manage

December 2024

College of Natural Resources and Environment, Northwest A&F University, Yangling, Shaanxi Province, 712100, PR China.

As biodegradable and bio-based plastics increasingly replace conventional plastics, the need for a comprehensive understanding of their ecotoxicity becomes more pressing. This review systematically presents the ecotoxicity of the microplastics (MPs) from different biodegradable plastics and bioplastics on various animals and plants. High doses of polylactic acid (PLA) MPs (10%) have been found to reduce plant nitrogen content and biomass, and affect the accumulation of heavy metals in plants.

A new prediction model based on deep learning for pig house environment.

Sci Rep

School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, Qiqihar University, Qiqihar, 161006, China.

A prediction model of the pig house environment based on Bayesian optimization (BO), squeeze and excitation block (SE), convolutional neural network (CNN) and gated recurrent unit (GRU) is proposed to improve the prediction accuracy and animal welfare and take control measures in advance. To ensure the optimal model configuration, the model uses a BO algorithm to fine-tune hyper-parameters, such as the number of GRUs, initial learning rate and L2 normal form regularization factor. The environmental data are fed into the SE-CNN block, which extracts the local features of the data through convolutional operations.

A circadian clock is reconstituted in vitro by incubating three proteins, KaiA, KaiB, and KaiC from the non-nitrogen-fixing cyanobacterium Synechococcus elongatus PCC 7942 in the presence of ATP. Leptolyngbya boryana is a filamentous cyanobacterium that grows diazotrophically under microoxic conditions. Among the aforementioned proteins, KaiC is the main clock oscillator belonging to the RecA ATPase superfamily.
