Thermal gas jet probes, including post-plasma desorption/ionization sources, have not been studied using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models, as have other ambient mass spectrometry sampling techniques. Two systems were constructed: a heated nitrogen jet probe to establish practical bounds for a sampling/transmission experiment and a CFD model to study trajectories of particles desorbed from a surface through optimization of streamlines and temperatures. The physical model configuration as tested using CFD revealed large losses, transmitting less than 10% of desorbed particles. Different distances between the desorption probe and the transport tube and from the sample surface were studied. The transmission improved when the system was very close to the sample, because the gas jet otherwise creates a region of low pressure that guides the streamlines below the inlet. A baffle positioned to increase pressure in the sample region improves collection efficiency. A Lagrangian particle tracking approach confirms the optimal design leading to a transmission of almost 100%.

Because coal seam mining with high geostress and high gas pressure is prone to coal-rock-gas compound dynamic disasters, a disaster energy equation considering the influence of roof elastic energy is established, and a disaster energy criterion considering the influence of roof elastic energy is derived and introduced into COMSOL software to conduct numerical simulations of coal seam mining under different geostress and gas pressures. The study revealed that the increase of ground stress reduces the gas pressure required for disaster occurrence. When the gas pressure reaches a certain value, the disaster will occur even if the ground stress is very small.

Pneumatic conveying inkjet bioprinting for the processing of living cells.

Biofabrication

January 2025

Research Group Anatomy, School for Medicine and Health Science, Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg, Carl von Ossietzky Str.9-11, Oldenburg, 26129, GERMANY.

Inkjet printing techniques are often used for bioprinting purposes because of their excellent printing characteristics, such as high cell viability and low apoptotic rate, contactless modus operandi, commercial availability, and low cost. However, they face some disadvantages, such as the use of bioinks of low viscosity, cell damage due to shear stress caused by drop ejection and jetting velocity, as well as a narrow range of available bioinks that still challenge the inkjet printing technology. New technological solutions are required to overcome these obstacles.

Progress in understanding the infrared spectrum of the H2O-O2 dimer.

J Chem Phys

January 2025

Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Calgary, 2500 University Drive North West, Calgary, Alberta T2N 1N4, Canada.

Spectra of the weakly bound H2O-O2 dimer are studied in the region of the H2O ν2 band using a tunable quantum cascade laser to probe a pulsed supersonic slit jet expansion. These are the first gas-phase infrared spectra of H2O-O2 and among only a few such results for O2-containing complexes. Almost 100 infrared lines are assigned based on the ground state combination differences from the microwave spectrum of H2O-O2.

This paper presents the initial results of the synthesis of β-GaO luminescent ceramics via plasma gas-thermal spraying synthesis, where low-temperature plasma of an argon and nitrogen mixture was employed. A direct current electric arc generator of high-enthalpy plasma jet with a self-aligning arc length and an expanding channel of an output electrode served as a plasma source. The feedstock material consisted of a polydisperse powder of monocrystalline β-GaO with particle sizes ranging from 5 to 50 μm.
