Benzo[de]isoquinolino[1,8-gh]quinolinetetracarboxylic diimide (BQQDI) is an n-type organic semiconductor that has shown unique multi-fold intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions, leading to aggregated structures with excellent charge transports and electron mobility properties. However, the strong intermolecular anchoring of BQQDI presents challenges for fine-tuning the molecular assembly and improving the semiconducting properties. Herein, we report the design and synthesis of two BQQDI derivatives with phenyl- and cyclohexyl substituents (Ph-BQQDI and Cy-BQQDI), where the two organic semiconductors show distinct molecular assemblies and degrees of intermolecular orbital overlaps. In addition, the difference in their packing motifs leads to strikingly different band structures that give rise to contrasting charge-transport capabilities. More specifically, Cy-BQQDI bearing bulky substituents exhibits isotropic intermolecular orbital overlaps resulting in equal averaged transfer integrals in both π-π stacking directions, even when dynamic disorders are taken into account; whereas Ph-BQQDI exhibits anisotropic averaged transfer integrals in these directions. As a result, Cy-BQQDI shows excellent device performances in both single-crystalline and polycrystalline thin-film organic field-effect transistors up to 2.3 and 1.0 cm V s, respectively.

In this work, a new n-type small molecule consisting of a fused thiophene backbone and barbituric acid as the electron-withdrawing group is reported. For green-selective organic photodiodes, when combined with p-type subphthalocyanine, the external quantum efficiency reached 64% at -3 V, owing to suitable absorption properties, efficient charge separation and relatively good transport.

Doping Efficiency of Poly(benzodifurandione) from First Principles.

Poly(benzodifurandione) (PBFDO) has emerged as a promising n-type conductive polymer (n-CP) for organic electronic applications, particularly in thermoelectrics (TE), due to its high doping efficiency and environmental stability. Unlike most high-performance p-type polymers, high-efficiency n-CPs are limited, posing a bottleneck in the TE module performance. In this study, we use first-principles electronic structure calculations to investigate the thermodynamic conditions that favor n-doping in PBFDO, focusing on the role of the temperature, chain length, and doping concentration.

Nanoarchitectonics of High-Performance and Flexible n-Type Organic-Inorganic Composite Thermoelectric Fibers for Wearable Electronics.

Since most conductive polymers are -type, developing high-performance -type organic-inorganic composite thermoelectric (TE) fibers is a great challenge. Herein, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)-coated AgTe nanowires (PC-AgTe NWs) were prepared by a liquid-phase reaction using PEDOT:PSS-coated Te nanowires (PC-Te NWs) as templates, and the PEDOT:PSS/PC-AgTe NWs composite fibers were then prepared by wet spinning. As the content of PC-AgTe NWs increases, the composite fiber changes from -type to -type.

The interaction of perfluoroaromatic compounds with 1-aminoadamantane followed by oxidation of the formed -adamantylanilines with -chloroperoxybenzoic acid led to functionalized -polyfluorophenyl--adamantylaminoxyls (mono- and diradicals) in high total yields. The molecular and crystal structures of -adamantylanilines and the aminoxyl radicals obtained from them by oxidation have been established using single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The introduction of a substituent into the polyfluorinated moiety affects the arrangement of -adamantylanilines in the crystal structure and the formation of hydrogen bonds; in addition, short contacts of the rare N···N type are present in crystals of 4-((adamantan-1-yl)amino)-perfluorobiphenyl.

N-type organic cathode materials containing carbonyl and imine groups have emerged as promising candidates for zinc-ion batteries due to their excellent charge storage capability, which arise from the synergic storage of both Zn and H. However, an increase in active sites also complicates the synthesis, introduces complex multi-electron reactions, and hinders comprehensive understanding of the charge storage mechanism and the evolution of molecular configuration during the electrochemical process. Herein, a 10-electron transfer organic cathode material, featuring imine and quinone groups that are spaced apart, was synthesized in one-step.
