A significant amount of nitrous oxide (NO) is effluxed into the atmosphere as a result of marine denitrification in the Arabian Sea (AS) oxygen minimum zone (OMZ). An assessment of temporal variations in the diversity and abundance of nosZ denitrifiers was performed to establish the relative importance of these bacteria in denitrification. Sampling was conducted at the Arabian Sea Time Series (ASTS) location and a quantitative PCR (qPCR) ana-lysis was performed. We detected a high abundance of the nosZ gene at core OMZ depths (250 m and 500 m), indicating the occurrence of denitrification in the AS-OMZ. The maximum abundance of the nosZ gene was observed during the Spring Intermonsoon (SIM) at 250 m (1.32×10 copies L) and 500 m (1.50×10 copies L). Sequencing ana-lysis showed that nosZ denitrifiers belonged to the classes Alpha-, Beta-, and Gammaproteobacteria. Taxonomic ana-lysis revealed that most OTUs were affiliated with Pseudomonas, Rhodopseudomonas, and Bradyrhizobium. Diversity indices and richness estimators confirmed a higher diversity of nosZ denitrifiers at 250 m than at 500 m during all three seasons. The present results also indicated that dissolved oxygen (DO) and total organic carbon (TOC) are critical factors influencing the diversity and abundance of the nosZ-denitrifying bacterial community.

Pharmaceutical and aquaculture wastewater contains not only antibiotics but also high concentrations of nitrogen, but few studies have been conducted on bacteria that target this complex pollution for degradation. A novel heterotrophic nitrifying aerobic denitrifying (HN-AD) strain Acinetobacter pittii TR1 isolated from soil. When the C/N ratio was 20, the strain could degrade 50 mg/L roxithromycin (ROX) and the nitrogen removal rate was 96.

Understanding the performance and microbial succession in nitrogen removal using fermentation liquid as carbon source can provide a practical basis for treating low C/N ratio wastewater. In this study, three typical fermentation liquids of food waste (FW) enriched with lactic acid (LA), propionic acid (PA), and butyric acid (BA) were added to high ammonia and high salt (HAHS) wastewater treatment process. Results showed that effluent TN decreased from 50 mg/L to around 15 mg/L with the influent concentration around 1000 mg/L after adding fermentation liquid enriched with LA and PA.

Eutrophication caused by human activities has severely impacted freshwater ecosystems, leading to harmful cyanobacterial blooms that threaten water quality and ecosystem stability. During blooms, denitrification is a key process for nitrogen removal, which can occur both in the sediment and in the waterbody mediated by cyanobacterial aggregate (CA)-associated microorganisms. In this study, the structure, dynamics and assembly mechanisms of CA-associated nirK-, nirS-, and nosZ-encoding denitrifying communities were investigated in the eutrophic Lake Taihu across the bloom season.

Tire wear particles (TWP) are emerging contaminants in the soil environment due to their widespread occurrence and potential threat to soil health. However, their impacts on soil biogeochemical processes remain unclear. Here, we investigated the effects of TWP at various doses and their leachate on soil respiration and denitrification using a robotized continuous-flow incubation system in upland soil.

Reusing treated wastewater (TWW) for crop irrigation has shown to provide environmental and economic benefits as well as drawbacks. This study was conducted using soils collected from a wastewater reuse facility in Tallahassee, FL, mainly to elucidate the long-term impact(s) of TWW irrigation on soil microbiome and nutrient status. Approximately 890 ha of land have been spray-irrigated with TWW since the 1980's to grow fodder crops.
