Hand function in the elderly: relation to osteoarthritis.

J Rheumatol

Division of Rheumatology, SMBD-Jewish General Hospital, Montreal, PQ, Canada.

Published: August 1987

Hand function and osteoarthritis (OA) were assessed in 32 subjects, over 60-years-old. The Smith Hand Function Test bore a relation to age, coordination and hand strength but not to the degree of OA. Hand strength also was not related to OA. Subjective hand disability, measured with the Stanford Health Assessment Questionnaire, correlated with radiographic OA and joint tenderness as well as with sex and hand strength. OA does not contribute significantly to the objective decline in hand function in the elderly but may contribute to a subjective sense of functional limitation.

Design of a light and Ca switchable organic-peptide hybrid.

Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A

SKKU Advanced Institute of Nanotechnology (SAINT), Sungkyunkwan University, Suwon 16419, Republic of Korea.

The design of organic-peptide hybrids has the potential to combine our vast knowledge of protein design with small molecule engineering to create hybrid structures with complex functions. Here, we describe the computational design of a photoswitchable Ca-binding organic-peptide hybrid. The designed molecule, designated Ca-binding switch (CaBS), combines an EF-hand motif from classical Ca-binding proteins such as calmodulin with a photoswitchable group that can be reversibly isomerized between a spiropyran (SP) and merocyanine (MC) state in response to different wavelengths of light.

Case: We present the case of a 24-year-old woman who sustained a left midshaft clavicle fracture with acute subclavian artery compression, subclavian vein laceration, and complete brachial plexus palsy after a motor vehicle collision. The patient underwent urgent open reduction internal fixation of the clavicle and repair of the subclavian vein. Two years later, she underwent opponensplasty and flexor digitorum profundus tendon transfers.

Early repair of flexor tendon injuries is ideal, but delays are common. We studied the outcomes of flexor tendon repairs delayed from 5 days to 6 months and carried out under wide-awake local anaesthesia with no tourniquet (WALANT). Twenty-four patients (29 fingers) who underwent primary flexor tendon repair on zone II using a four- to six-strand core suture technique, followed by controlled early active motion therapy.

The first complete hand-rearing of two neonatal finless porpoises.

PLoS One

Laboratory of Veterinary Biochemistry, School of Veterinary Medicine, Rakuno Gakuen University, Ebetsu, Hokkaido, Japan.

Hand-rearing of marine mammals is an essential technique for the husbandry of orphans in captivity or the wild, especially endangered cetacean species. The purpose of the present study was to establish a method for successful hand-rearing and evaluate the nutritional state of neonatal finless porpoises. Two neonate finless porpoises maternally neglected at 5 days of age (Day 5) (neonate A, animal A) and Day 4 (neonate B, animal B) were hand reared.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the leading health problems in the world. It is silent in the early stages and gradually progresses, inducing renal physiological and structural alterations. Moreover, CKD is associated with impaired life quality, increased risk for cardiovascular diseases, and reduced life expectancy.
