It is widely known among photographers that photographing a room with a wide-angle lens exaggerates the size of the room; nevertheless, such images are commonly found on hotel-reservation web sites. The present paper points out that the size exaggeration is a kind of optical illusion caused by an inappropriate viewpoint from which the image is seen, and presents a method we developed for removing the illusion and thus recovering the true appearance of the room. This method requires only a single image together with the lens center at which the image is taken. From this information, we can generate images that would be obtained if we stand at the same point as the camera and pan around the original scene, changing the view direction. The validity of the method is shown by examples. Possible applications to size-exaggerated images posted on web sites are also discussed.

Nitrogen (N) doping of biomass prior pyrolysis has been identified as an effective approach for enhancing biochar catalytic reactivity. However, high-temperature pyrolysis of N-rich biomass may produce N-devoid biochars with high reactivity, calling for attention to the true causes of the reactivity increases and the role of nitrogen. In this study, N-doped wheat straw biochar (N-BC) materials were produced using urea as N dopant and different pyrolysis conditions, and their catalytic reactivity assessed for the reduction of trichloroethylene (TCE) by green rust (GR), a layered Fe(II)Fe(III) hydroxide.

Retinal image registration is essential for monitoring eye diseases and planning treatments, yet it remains challenging due to large deformations, minimal overlap, and varying image quality. To address these challenges, we propose RetinaRegNet, a multi-stage image registration model with zero-shot generalizability across multiple retinal imaging modalities. RetinaRegNet begins by extracting image features using a pretrained latent diffusion model.

Introduction: During revision surgery for the management of patients presenting with long-bone upper extremity nonunion, it is crucial to rule out fracture-related infection (FRI). This is especially true if there are clinical signs suggestive of FRI, or if there is a history of prior FRI, open wound fracture, or surgery. This study aimed to determine the efficacy of frozen section analysis (FSA) in providing real-time diagnosis of FRI in patients with upper-limb long-bone nonunion undergoing revision surgery.

We consider kernel-based supervised learning using random Fourier features, focusing on its statistical error bounds and generalization properties with general loss functions. Beyond the least squares loss, existing results only demonstrate worst-case analysis with rate n and the number of features at least comparable to n, and refined-case analysis where it can achieve almost n rate when the kernel's eigenvalue decay is exponential and the number of features is again at least comparable to n. For the least squares loss, the results are much richer and the optimal rates can be achieved under the source and capacity assumptions, with the number of features smaller than n.

Purpose: To investigate the effect of average intraocular pressure (IOP) on the true rate of glaucoma progression (RoP) in the United Kingdom Glaucoma Treatment Study (UKGTS).
Methods: UKGTS participants were randomized to placebo or Latanoprost drops and monitored for up to two years with visual field tests (VF, 24-2 SITA standard), IOP measurements, and optic nerve imaging. We included eyes with at least three structural or functional assessments (VF with <15% false-positive errors).
