Nothing about us without us: A co-production strategy for communities, researchers and stakeholders to identify ways of improving health and reducing inequalities. | LitMetric

AI Article Synopsis

Article Abstract

Introduction: Co-production with communities is increasingly seen as best practice that can improve the quality, relevance and effectiveness of research and service delivery. Despite this promising position, there remains uncertainty around definitions of co-production and how to operationalize it. The current paper describes the development of a co-production strategy to guide the work of the ActEarly multistakeholder preventative research programme to improve children's health in Bradford and Tower Hamlets, UK.

Methods: The strategy used Appreciative Inquiry (AI), an approach following a five-step iterative process: to define (Step 1) scope and guide progress; to discover (Step 2) key issues through seven focus groups (N = 36) and eight in-depth interviews with key stakeholders representing community groups, and the voluntary and statutory sectors; to dream (Step 3) best practice through two workshops with AI participants to review findings; to design (Step 4) a co-production strategy building on AI findings and to deliver (Step 5) the practical guidance in the strategy.

Results: Nine principles for how to do co-production well were identified: power should be shared; embrace a wide range of perspectives and skills; respect and value the lived experience; benefits should be for all involved parties; go to communities and do not expect them to come to you; work flexibly; avoid jargon and ensure availability of the right information; relationships should be built for the long-term; co-production activities should be adequately resourced. These principles were based on three underlying values of equality, reciprocity and agency.

Conclusion: The empirical insights of the paper highlight the crucial importance of adequate resources and infrastructure to deliver effective co-production. This documentation of one approach to operationalizing co-production serves to avert any misappropriations of the term 'co-production' by listening to service users, stakeholders and other relevant groups, to develop trust and long-term relationships, and build on the learning that already exists amongst such groups.

Patient Or Public Contribution: The work was overseen by a steering group (N = 17) of individuals, both professional and members of the public with experience in undertaking co-production, and/or with some knowledge of the context of the two ActEarly field sites, who provided regular oversight and feedback on the AI process.

A strategy for co-extracting hydroxycinnamic acids with hemicellulose, cellulose and lignin from wheat residues in an integrated biorefinery.

Int J Biol Macromol

December 2024

Chemical Engineering Department, Stellenbosch University, Private Bag X1, Stellenbosch 7602, South Africa. Electronic address:

Cross-linkages with polysaccharides and lignin compromise hydroxycinnamic acid yields and purity in integrated biorefineries. A two-stage-alkaline-based process was sequentially optimised in a wheat straw (WS) and wheat bran (WB)-based biorefinery setup for selective co-production of hydroxycinnamic acids (p-Coumaric acid & ferulic acid) with hemicellulose at the mild-alkaline stage (MAS), and with lignin & cellulose-rich residues at severe-alkaline stage (SAS). The optimum MAS biorefining conditions gave hemicellulose, lignin, and hydroxycinnamic acid yields of 35, 60, and 85 % for WS, and 37, 72, and 66 % for WB, respectively.

Designing cobalt-nickel dual-atoms on boron, nitrogen-codoped carbon nanotubes for carbon dioxide electroreduction to syngas.

Henan Provincial Key Laboratory of Surface & Interface Science, Henan Engineering Research Center of Technology and Equipment of Biodegradable Materials, School of Material and Chemical Engineering, Zhengzhou University of Light Industry, Zhengzhou 450002, PR China. Electronic address:

Developing highly efficient electrocatalysts to produce syngas with a stable hydrogen/carbon monoxide (H/CO) ratio in a wide potential window via electrochemical carbon dioxide (CO) reduction is desperately required but still challenging. Herein, a dual-atomic site on boron, nitrogen-codoped carbon nanotubes (BCN) has been designed, containing both cobalt (CoN) and nickel (NiNB) sites. Benefiting from the structure advantage and the bifunctional Co/Ni sites, such designed catalyst (CoNi-BCN) demonstrates remarkable performance for syngas production, achieving a stable H/CO ratio of 1.

Metallic heterostructural nanocrystals (HNCs) hold immense potential in electrocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CORR) owing to their abundant active sites and high intrinsic activity. However, a significant challenge still remains in achieving controlled nucleation and growth sites for HNCs on supports and comprehending the influence of the structure-activity relationship on electrocatalytic CORR performance. This work presents a photochemical self-assembly technique without the necessity for reducing agents or facet-specific capping agents.

Isolation of salt-tolerant Vibrio alginolyticus X511 for efficient co-production of 2,3-butanediol and alginate lyase from Laminaria japonica.

Int J Biol Macromol

December 2024

Institute of Bast Fiber Crops & Center of Southern Economic Crops, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences, Key Laboratory of Biological and Processing for Bast Fiber Crops of Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, Engineering and Technology Center for Bast Fiber Crops of Hunan Province, Changsha 410205, China. Electronic address:

In order to establish an efficient microbial transformation platform based on seaweed feedstocks, experiments were performed to isolate a salt-tolerant strain capable of producing alginate lyase and 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO). Its physiological and biochemical characteristics, carbon source utilization, and product synthesis capabilities were investigated, and then the process for co-producing alginate lyase and 2,3-BDO from Laminaria japonica was optimized. Results showed that the isolated strain was identified as Vibrio alginolyticus, which was capable of utilizing multiple carbon sources to produce alginate lyase and 2,3-BDO even in the presence of 5 % NaCl.

Subcutaneous electroencephalography monitoring for people with epilepsy and intellectual disability: co-production workshops.

BJPsych Open

December 2024

Cornwall Intellectual Disability Equitable Research (CIDER), Cornwall Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, Bodmin, UK; and Peninsula Medical School, Faculty of Health, University of Plymouth, Plymouth, UK.

Background: Nearly 25% of people with intellectual disability (PwID) have epilepsy compared to 1% of the UK general population. PwID are commonly excluded from research, eventually affecting their care. Understanding seizures in PwID is particularly challenging because of reliance on subjective external observation and poor objective validation.
