Published: January 2023

Objective: The objective was to compare the recurrence rate and complications between endoscopic middle meatal antrostomy (MMA) and extended MMA for the treatment of antrochoanal polyps (ACPs).

Methods And Materials: 95 ACPs were prospectively enrolled to undergo MMA (n = 48) or extended MMA (n = 47). The recurrence rate and complications were compared between these groups.

Results: All patients completed 24 months of follow-up. The recurrence of ACP was demonstrated by only endoscope at 6 and 12 months postoperatively but at 24 months postoperatively by endoscope and CT. Rates of recurrence of ACP differed between groups and significance at postoperative month 6 (7/48 patients in the MMA group and 0/47 patients in the extended MMA group, P = 0.02), month 12 (16/48 vs. 2/47, P < 0.01) and month 24 (21/48 vs. 3/47, P < 0.01). No MMA closure was found in any group, 19.15% (9/47) patients complained of cheek numbness in the extended MMA group, however, no major complications were observed in both groups.

Conclusions: Extended MMA via antidromic extended medial wall of MS may effectively reduce the recurrence of ACP with lower complications.

The opioid crisis, driven by synthetic opioids like fentanyl, demands innovative solutions. The opioid antidote naloxone has a short action ( ~ 1 hour), requiring repeated doses. To address this, we present a new and simple naloxone prodrug delivery system repurposing a hydrophilic derivative of acoramidis, a potent transthyretin ligand.

Printable and Tunable Bioresin with Strategically Decorated Molecular Structures.

Adv Mater

December 2024

Experimental Mechanics Laboratory, Mechanical Engineering Department, San Diego State University, 5500 Campanile Drive, San Diego, CA, 92182, USA.

As personalized medicine rapidly evolves, there is a critical demand for advanced biocompatible materials surpassing current additive manufacturing capabilities. This study presents a novel printable bioresin engineered with tunable mechanical, thermal, and biocompatibility properties through strategic molecular modifications. The study introduces a new bioresin comprising methyl methacrylate (MMA), ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA), and a photoinitiator, which is further enhanced by incorporating high molecular weight polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) to improve biostability and mechanical performance.

Anti-polyelectrolyte effect of zwitterions containing (meth)acrylic waterborne polymer chains as tool for colloidal stabilization and polymer reinforcement.

The anti-polyelectrolyte effect, a characteristic unique to polymer chains containing zwitterions, was investigated for its impact on colloidal stabilization during emulsion polymerization and on the resulting polymer characteristics. The zwitterionic monomer (ZM) 3-[(3-Acrylamidopropyl)dimethylammonio]propane-1-sulfonate (A3361) was selected for the synthesis of 30 wt% emulsifier-free methyl methacrylate/n-butyl acrylate (MMA/n-BA) polymer latex. Three pH conditions were examined: neutral, where the zwitterionic chains are in a collapsed state, and acidic and basic, where these chains adopt an extended conformation, leading to the anti-polyelectrolyte effect.

On the Activation Energy of Termination in Radical Polymerization, as Studied at Low Conversion.

Polymers (Basel)

November 2024

School of Physical and Chemical Sciences, University of Canterbury, Private Bag 4800, Christchurch 8140, New Zealand.

The chain-length-dependent nature of the termination reaction in radical polymerization (RP) renders the overall termination rate coefficient, <>, a complex parameter in the usual situation where the radical chain-length distribution is non-uniform. This applies also for the activation energy of termination, (<>), which we subject to detailed mechanistic investigation for the first time. The experimental side of this work measures (<>) for the dilute-solution, low-conversion, chemically initiated homopolymerization of styrene (ST), methyl methacrylate (MMA), butyl methacrylate, and dodecyl methacrylate.
