Organ transplantation is the last-resort option to treat organ failure. However, less than 10% of patients benefit from this only option due to lack of major histocompatibility complex (MHC)-matched donor organs and 25%-80% of donated organs could not find MHC-matched recipients. T cell allorecognition is the principal mechanism for allogeneic graft rejection.

However, commercial X-irradiators are not widely available while little is known about their safety and efficacy for platelet products. Histocompatibility is the ability to discriminate between self and non-self tissues, and has been described in species throughout the metazoa. Despite its universal presence, histocompatibility genes utilized by different phyla are unique-those found in sponges, cnidarians, ascidians, and vertebrates are not orthologous. Thus, the origins of these sophisticated recognition systems, and any potential functional commonalities between them, are not understood.

Organ transplantation remains the most optimal strategy for patients with end-stage organ failure. However, prevailing methods of immunosuppression are marred by adverse side effects, and allograft rejection remains common. It is imperative to identify and comprehensively characterize the cell types involved in allograft rejection, and develop therapies with greater specificity.
