Purpose: Implants in orthopedic trauma and arthroplasty surgery establish a milieu conducive to biofilm formation. Antimicrobial-loaded cements (ABCs) and beads have become popular in treating acute and chronic orthopedic surgery-related infections. The growing incidence of antimicrobial resistance has necessitated the exploration of alternative antibiotic medications.

Objective: To give a comprehensive understanding of the efficacy of antimicrobial-loaded scaffolds as drug delivery system for periodontal regeneration, and to review the recent advances in the field of periodontal regeneration.
Methods: The literature was reviewed using key words "antimicrobial releasing periodontal scaffolds" on Science Direct, PubMed and Web of Science search engines. Shortlisted articles were evaluated on the basis of specific inclusion-exclusion criteria.

: Local antimicrobial delivery via calcium sulfate (CaSO ) beads is used as an adjunctive treatment for periprosthetic joint infection. There is limited clinical information describing the performance of antimicrobial-loaded CaSO (ALCS) in large-scale applications. We developed a simulated large joint model to study properties of eluting ALCS.

Periprosthetic joint infection (PJI) is a difficult complication requiring a comprehensive eradication protocol. Cure rates have essentially stalled in the last two decades, using methods of antimicrobial cement joint spacers and parenteral antimicrobial agents. Functional spacers with higher-dose antimicrobial-loaded cement and antimicrobial-loaded calcium sulphate beads have emphasized local antimicrobial delivery on the premise that high-dose local antimicrobial delivery will enhance eradication.
