Published: December 2022

: This study reviewed the literature to summarize the current and recent knowledge of temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJOA). : Through a literature review, this work summarizes many concepts related to TMJOA. : Although many signaling pathways have been investigated, the etiopathogenesis of TMJOA remains unclear. Some clinical signs are suggestive of TMJOA; however, diagnosis is mainly based on radiological findings. Treatment options include noninvasive, minimally invasive, and surgical techniques. Several study models have been used in TMJOA studies because there is no gold standard model. : More research is needed to develop curative treatments for TMJOA, which could be tested with reliable in vitro models, and to explore tissue engineering to regenerate damaged temporomandibular joints.

The lateral pterygoid muscle (LPM), a critical component of the masticatory muscles, typically comprises upper (SLPM) and lower (ILPM) heads. However, it is essential to note that the LPM's structure is not a constant feature, as the number of bundles and their topography can vary. Moreover, additional heads, such as medial and middle heads, and unique-headed configurations of the LPM have been reported.

Arthrocentesis of Temporomandibular Joints-A Clinical Comparative Study.

Life (Basel)

December 2024

Department of Cranio-Maxillofacial Surgery, Oral Surgery and Implantology, Medical University of Warsaw, 02-005 Warsaw, Poland.

The objective of this study was to compare single-needle arthrocentesis with the conventional two-needle arthrocentesis, as well as the additional intracapsular injection of hyaluronic acid or platelet-rich fibrin. A total of 96 patients with established osteoarthritis (OA) ( = 48) or with internal de-arrangement (DD) ( = 48) were assigned single-needle arthrocentesis with distension of the joint or conventional two-needle arthrocentesis with or without intracapsular injection of the medication (hyaluronic acid (HA) or platelet-rich plasma (PRP)) performed every month over a period of 6 months. The maximum mouth opening and pain, as measured by the visual analog scale (VAS), were compared.

Background: The accurate diagnosis of degenerative joint diseases (DJDs) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) presents a significant clinical challenge due to their progressive nature and the complexity of associated structural changes. These conditions, characterized by cartilage degradation, subchondral bone remodeling, and eventual joint dysfunction, necessitate reliable and efficient imaging techniques for early detection and effective management. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is widely regarded as the gold standard for evaluating osseous changes in the TMJ, offering detailed visualization of bony structures.

Effect of regional crosstalk between sympathetic nerves and sensory nerves on temporomandibular joint osteoarthritic pain.

Int J Oral Sci

January 2025

Department of Stomatology, Tangdu Hospital & State Key Laboratory of Oral & Maxillofacial Reconstruction and Regeneration, School of Stomatology, The Fourth Military Medical University, Xi'an, China.

Temporomandibular joint osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA) is a common disease often accompanied by pain, seriously affecting physical and mental health of patients. Abnormal innervation at the osteochondral junction has been considered as a predominant origin of arthralgia, while the specific mechanism mediating pain remains unclear. To investigate the underlying mechanism of TMJ-OA pain, an abnormal joint loading model was used to induce TMJ-OA pain.

Isolated Temporomandibular Arthritis as Presentation of Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis.

J Craniofac Surg

January 2025

Rheumatology Unit, Department of Childhood and Developmental Medicine, ASST Fatebenefratelli-Sacco, Milano, MI.

Involvement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) in patients with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) has been increasingly reported, affecting up to 87% of cases. This involvement generally occurs after the diagnosis of JIA has been established; however, in the authors' cases, as in a few others documented in the literature, patients presented with isolated TMJ arthritis as the sole joint involvement. The authors performed a narrative literature review on TMJ involvement in JIA and reported 2 cases that presented with isolated TMJ arthritis as the initial manifestation of JIA.
