During a field survey of parasitic ciliates diversity in South Korea, a scuticociliate was found in a water sample collected during scuba diving. At first glance, the species looks similar to members of the genus Paranophrys especially P. magna but they differ mainly in the body size and the number of somatic kineties.

Nosé-Hoover Integrators at-a-Glance: Barostat Integration Has a Demonstrable Effect on Uniaxial Tension Results of Solid Materials.

J Chem Theory Comput

January 2025

Mechanical and Industrial Engineering Department, Northeastern University, Boston, Massachusetts 02115, United States.

Article Synopsis
  • Molecular dynamics is crucial for studying tensile stress in nanomaterials, but many studies lack detailed information on thermostat and barostat damping parameters.
  • The paper demonstrates how the integration of barostat affects system dynamics during uniaxial tests using the Nosé-Hoover scheme by examining three different material systems: 2D graphene, 3D continuous aluminum, and 3D discontinuous polyvinyl alcohol.
  • High barostat damping parameters in isobaric-isothermal (NPT) simulations show a close correlation with isochoric-isothermal (NVT) methods, indicating that small changes in damping parameters can significantly impact stress responses, particularly increasing triaxial strain levels.

Cancer hypoxia, a crucial characteristic of malignancy, ranging from practically non-hypoxic to severe, impacts gene expression, metabolism and mechanisms associated with tumor formation serves as a key obstacle in cancer therapy. It triggers a complex network of cell signaling pathways, such as the NF-κB, PI3K, mTOR/AKT,MAPK, HIF and their associated genes regulating the effects of the same. The onset and advancement of cancer are attributed to genetic and epigenetic modifications which are intrinsically related.

Erythroblast enucleation at a glance.

J Cell Sci

October 2024

Department of Biochemistry and Chemistry, La Trobe University, Melbourne, VIC 3073, Australia.

Erythroid enucleation, the penultimate step in mammalian erythroid terminal differentiation, is a unique cellular process by which red blood cells (erythrocytes) remove their nucleus and accompanying nuclear material. This complex, multi-stage event begins with chromatin compaction and cell cycle arrest and ends with generation of two daughter cells: a pyrenocyte, which contains the expelled nucleus, and an anucleate reticulocyte, which matures into an erythrocyte. Although enucleation has been compared to asymmetric cell division (ACD), many mechanistic hallmarks of ACD appear to be absent.

The use of a multi-metric readout screen to identify EHMT2/G9a-inhibition as a modulator of cancer-associated fibroblast activation state.

Cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) play a pivotal role in cancer progression, including mediating tumour cell invasion via their pro-invasive secretory profile and ability to remodel the extracellular matrix (ECM). Given that reduced CAF abundance in tumours correlates with improved outcomes in various cancers, we set out to identify epigenetic targets involved in CAF activation in regions of tumour-stromal mixing with the goal of reducing tumour aggressiveness. Using the GLAnCE (Gels for Live Analysis of Compartmentalized Environments) platform, we performed an image-based, phenotypic screen that enabled us to identify modulators of CAF abundance and the capacity of CAFs to induce tumour cell invasion.
