Novel Compton suppression equipment in γ-ray spectrometry with list mode data acquisition.

Published: March 2023

A novel Compton suppression device has been developed at the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority of Finland to improve the sensitivity of measurements in the Gamma Laboratory. It utilizes γ-γ anticoincidence, but operates as a full coincidence system. Specific software has been developed for the sorting, visualization and analysis of list mode data produced by the multi-detector list-mode devices in the Gamma Laboratory. By utilizing the software, the coincidence data can be accessed and the true-coincidence losses of photo-peaks of multiple gamma-ray-emitting nuclides restored in the analysis. This simplifies data analysis and further increases the sensitivity of the device in low count-rate gamma spectrometry. A detailed Geant4 simulation model of the device was developed and used to optimize the device as well as to support calibrations and complex analysis tasks. The setup has been integrated to current laboratory information management system used in the Gamma Laboratory. Compton suppression reduces the continuous background seen by the high-purity germanium detector by a factor of 3-10, in addition to comparable reduction in the Compton continuum of any peaks in the spectrum. A comparison with the results of conventional gamma-ray spectrometry is presented.

Development of anticoincidence detector specializing in small-angle Compton scattering gamma rays for boron neutron capture therapy.

Appl Radiat Isot

December 2024

Division of Quantum and Radiation Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, Osaka Metropolitan University, 1-2 Gakuen-cho, Naka-ku, Sakai, Osaka, 599-8570, Japan.

A novel anticoincidence detector is proposed for the measurement of 478 keV gamma radiation for evaluation of boron neutron capture therapy. The Compton continuum around the target photopeak position is effectively suppressed by measuring only the Compton gamma rays scattered at small angles from the primary detector. A numerical evaluation using Monte Carlo simulations estimated an 80% reduction in counts, and the developed prototype detector showed 4% suppression of the Compton continuum of cobalt-60 gamma rays.

Cancer Prevalence across Vertebrates.

Cancer Discov

January 2025

Arizona Cancer Evolution Center, The Biodesign Institute, Arizona State University, Tempe, Arizona.

Cancer is pervasive across multicellular species, but what explains the differences in cancer prevalence across species? Using 16,049 necropsy records for 292 species spanning three clades of tetrapods (amphibians, sauropsids, and mammals), we found that neoplasia and malignancy prevalence increases with adult mass (contrary to Peto's paradox) and somatic mutation rate but decreases with gestation time. The relationship between adult mass and malignancy prevalence was only apparent when we controlled for gestation time. Evolution of cancer susceptibility appears to have undergone sudden shifts followed by stabilizing selection.

A prompt γ-ray neutron activation analysis system has recently been developed at China advanced research reactor (CARR), the 60 MW research reactor in China Institute of Atomic Energy (CIAE). The system is set at the cold neutron beam guide with a thermal equivalent neutron flux at the sample position of 1.0 × 10 n·cm·s with the power of 30 MW, and it is mainly composed of a neutron beam collimator, a sample chamber, a beam stopper, neutron and γ-ray shieldings and a detection system.

Lung counting with a highly segmented HPGe detector.

Appl Radiat Isot

October 2024

STUK - Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority, Jokiniemenkuja 1, FI-01370 Vantaa, Finland.

A highly segmented High-Purity Germanium (HPGe) detector was used to measure Am activity located inside the lungs of an anthropomorphic phantom with various active and passive shield configurations. It was found that the background suppression shield does not play a significant role in reducing the Minimum Detectable Activity (MDA) after veto, based on the segmentation in the depth direction of the HPGe, when measuring low-energy gamma rays. A reduction of up to 57% in the MDA was achieved.

Norethindrone dosing for adequate menstrual suppression in adolescents.

J Pediatr Endocrinol Metab

August 2023

Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Michigan Medicine, Ann Arbor, MI, USA.

Objectives: We sought to study factors predictive of achieving menstrual suppression with norethindrone vs. norethindrone acetate in adolescents, as optimal dosing is unknown. Secondary outcomes included analyzing prescriber practices and patient satisfaction.
