Millions of acres of farmland in the midwestern United States (US) are artificially drained, and this contributes to the export of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) from agricultural land to surface water. Using a 36-acre tile-drained farm field, effects of P-sorbing media in combination with a denitrifying bioreactor system constructed with woodchips (WC) and corn stover (CS) on reducing nutrient export in drainage water were tested for 3 cropping years (2018-2020). The field was divided into three subfields as replicates. In each subfield, the drainage water was divided and separately channeled into three bioreactors, each of which contains one of the three different substrates: WC, CS, and CS-WC (1:1 v/v mixture of CS and WC), randomly assigned. The outlet of each compartment contained a 2.25 L flow-through chamber filled with activated iron (Fe) filings as P-sorbing material. Both WC and CS bioreactors were effective in removing drainage NO with a 77% (WC), 86% (CS), and 89% (CS-WC) reduction in mean NO -N concentration. For the three cropping years, the WC bioreactor reduced the total drainage inorganic N (NO -N + NH -N) load by 72%, but the CS bioreactor increased the total inorganic N load in the drainage water due to the substantial release of NH with the decomposition of CS. The breakdown of CS also increased drainage P. The NH and P release decreased with the decrease in the proportion of CS; thus, not more than 10% of CS is recommended for blending with WC to enhance the performance of a bioreactor. The P-sorbing Fe filing media reduced the P loads in drainage by an average of 19% during the 2-year study.

Purpose Hepatic abscesses remain a significant clinical challenge due to high morbidity and mortality. This research aims to examine the etiological spectrum, management approaches, clinical features, and results in hepatic abscesses in a tertiary care facility in northern India, emphasizing the distinctions among pyogenic liver abscesses (PLAs) and amoebic liver abscesses (ALAs). Methods This retrospective study was done at GSVM Medical College, Kanpur, analyzing 725 patients with hepatic abscesses over a 10-year period.

The Eastern Corn Belt (ECB) node of the Long-Term Agroecosystem Research (LTAR) network is representative of row crop agricultural production systems in the poorly drained, humid regions of the US Midwest and a significant focus for addressing water quantity and quality concerns affecting Lake Erie and the Gulf of Mexico. The objectives of this paper were to (1) present relevant background information and collection methodology, (2) provide summary analyses of measured data, and (3) provide details for accessing the dataset and discuss potential database applications. The ECB-water quality (ECB-WQ) database is comprised of hydrology and water quality data from three privately owned farms in Northwest Ohio and Northeast Indiana and is available for download through the United States Department of Agriculture Ag Data Commons.

In farmland shelterbelt systems, the decomposition and/or apoptosis of forest fine root litter could affect farmland soil properties at the tree-crop interface, particularly the soil nitrogen (N) cycling. However, how fine root litter affect the ammonia (NH) and nitrous oxide (NO) losses from farmland soil and the crop production is little known. A soil column experiment covering a whole rice season was conducted to evaluate the dynamics aforesaid in response to fine root litter of Populus (RP) and Metasequoia glyptostroboides (RM) with 0 and 240 kg ha N fertilizer input.

This article shows the behavior of the corrosive effect of acid mine water on carbon steel metal alloys. Mining equipment, composed of various steel alloys, is particularly prone to damage from highly acidic water. This corrosion results in material thinning, brittle fractures, fatigue cracks, and ultimately, equipment failure.

Climate change significantly challenges smallholder mixed crop-livestock (MCL) systems in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), affecting food and feed production. This study enhances the SIMPLACE modeling framework by incorporating crop-vegetation-livestock models, which contribute to the development of sustainable agricultural practices in response to climate change. Applying such a framework in a domain in West Africa (786,500 km) allowed us to estimate the changes in crop (Maize, Millet, and Sorghum) yield, grass biomass, livestock numbers, and greenhouse gas emission in response to future climate scenarios.
