Ukrainian health care before 2021 was like that in comparable middle-income countries. The conflict with Russia over the last 8 months has added significant burden to the already resource-constrained system. We describe the current neurosurgical situation in Ukraine as well as remote and in-person efforts to provide needed assistance to Ukrainian neurosurgical colleagues.

Global Neurosurgery has been described as the clinical and public health practice of neurosurgery with the primary purpose of ensuring timely, safe, and affordable neurosurgical care to all who need it. Global Neurosurgery activities in the form of mission trips, educational partnerships, and research collaborations have been in place for decades. Early exposure to neurosurgery has been shown to have a positive influence on students' perceptions and attitudes towards the field of neurosurgery. This review delves into the problems faced by the neurosurgery workforce in LMICs, highlighting the necessity for local and international collaborative strategies and plans to enhance the medical education curriculum, training, and retention of neurosurgeons in their home countries.
