Background: Characteristics of airway microbiota might influence asthma status or asthma phenotype. Identifying the airway microbiome can help to investigate its role in the development of asthma phenotypes or small airway function.
Methods: Bacterial microbiota profiles were analyzed in induced sputum from 31 asthma patients and 12 healthy individuals from Beijing, China. Associations between small airway function and airway microbiomes were examined.
Results: Composition of sputum microbiota significantly changed with small airway function in asthma patients. Two microbiome-driven clusters were identified and characterized by small airway function and taxa that had linear relationship with small airway functions were identified.
Conclusions: Our findings confirm that airway microbiota was associated with small airway function in asthma patients.

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive interstitial lung disease in which repetitive epithelial injury and incomplete alveolar repair result in accumulation of profibrotic intermediate/transitional "aberrant" epithelial cell states. The mechanisms leading to the emergence and persistence of aberrant epithelial populations in the distal lung remain incompletely understood. By interrogating single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data from patients with IPF and a mouse model of repeated lung epithelial injury, we identified persistent activation of hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) signaling in these aberrant epithelial cells.

Extracellular nanoparticles (EPs) are a subject of increasing interest for their biological role as mediators in cell-cell communication; however, their harvesting and assessment from bodily fluids are challenging, as processing can significantly affect samples. With the aim of minimizing processing artifacts, we assessed the number density () and hydrodynamic diameter () of EPs directly in diluted plasma and blood using the following recently developed technique: interferometric light microscopy (ILM). We analyzed 613 blood and plasma samples from human patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), collected in trisodium citrate and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) anticoagulants, and 163 blood and plasma samples from canine patients with brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS).
