In some occasions, outdoor steel structures like wind towers, bridges, winter sports facilities, and so on are subjected to extreme environmental conditions with the presence of ice and/or with below-zero temperatures. Sometimes in these situations, surface protection of the steel structure is usually designed using hot-dip galvanizing to improve its durability. In these special circumstances, the structure's connections are also exposed to adverse climatic agents.

Rising temperatures due to climate change may affect the quality of open-field cultivated processing tomatoes by altering the nutrient content. Bioinoculants are growing in popularity as a nature-based strategy to mitigate these environmental stresses. Untargeted quantitative NMR spectroscopy was leveraged to characterize the metabolome of tomato fruits exposed to abiotic stress during the year 2022, which was marked by unexpected high temperatures and low rainfall compared to the year 2021 with average conditions.

Association analysis of dry heat or wet cold weather and the risk of urolithiasis hospitalization in a southern Chinese city.

Sci Rep

Department of Epidemiology and Health Statistics, School of Public Health and Health Management, Gannan Medical University, Ganzhou, 341000, Jiangxi, China.

To analyze the relationship between hot or cold, and wet or dry interacting weather, and urolithiasis-related hospitalizations. Distributed lag nonlinear model for time series design was used to build exposure-response curves for the association of daily mean temperature and relative humidity with urolithiasis-related hospitalizations. Cut-off values were determined for temperature, humidity, and dichotomous categories to define heat-cold and wet-dry meteorological conditions.

The invasion of cane toads (Rhinella marina) across tropical Australia has resulted in the rapid evolution of traits that enable higher rates of dispersal, and that adapt toads to hot dry climates. In anurans, a larger heart facilitates both locomotor activity and desiccation tolerance. Heart size is also often affected, either directly or indirectly, by parasite infections.

Radiative Warming Glass for High-Latitude Cold Regions.

Adv Sci (Weinh)

January 2025

Department of Electronic Engineering, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shatin, New Territories, Hong Kong SAR, 999077, China.

Traditional window glazing, with inherently adverse energy-efficient optical properties, leads to colossal energy losses. Energy-saving glass requires a customized optical design for different climate zones. Compared with the widely researched radiative cooling technology which is preferable to be used in low-altitude hot regions; conversely in high-latitude cold regions, high solar transmittance (T) and low mid-infrared thermal emissivity (ε) are the key characteristics of high-performance radiative warming window glass, while the current low-emissivity (low-e) glass is far from ideal.
