Recently, injectable hydrogels have attracted much interest in tissue engineering (TE) applications because of their controlled flowability, adaptability, and easy handling properties. This work emphasizes the synthesis and characterizations of bioactive glass (BAG) nanoparticle-reinforced poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG)- and poly(-vinylcarbazole) (pNVC)-based minimally invasive composite injectable hydrogel suitable for bone regeneration. First, the copolymer was synthesized from a combination of PEG and pNVC through reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization and nanocomposite hydrogel constructs were subsequently prepared by conjugating BAG particles at varying loading concentrations. Gel permeation chromatography (GPC) analysis confirmed the controlled nature of the polymer. Various physicochemical characterization results confirmed the successful synthesis of copolymer and nanocomposite hydrogels that showed good gelling and injectability properties. Our optimal nanocomposite hydrogel formulation showed excellent swelling properties in comparison to the copolymeric hydrogel due to the presence of hydrophilic BAG particles. The bone cell proliferation rate was found to be evidently higher in the nanocomposite hydrogel than in the copolymeric hydrogel. Moreover, the enhanced level of ALP activity and apatite mineralization for the nanocomposite in comparison to that for the copolymeric hydrogel indicates accelerated osteogenesis. Overall, our study findings indicate BAG particle-conjugated nanocomposite hydrogels can be used as promising grafting materials in orthopedic reconstructive surgeries complementary to conventional bone graft substitutes in cancellous bone defects due to their 3D porous framework, minimal invasiveness, and ability to form any desired shape to match irregular bone defects.

A novel nanocomposite magnetic hydrogel was synthesized based on κ-carrageenan, acrylic acid, and activated carbon as an absorbent for removing heavy metal ions from aqueous solution. FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and vibration sample magnetometer (VSM) were employed to confirm the structure of the nanocomposite hydrogels. The effects of contact time, pH, particle size, temperature, and metal ion concentration on the metal ion adsorption were investigated.

Tannic acid (TA) has attracted the attention of researchers as a promising organic ligand capable of forming metal-organic coordination networks with various metal ions at interfaces to impact surface properties. In this study, we innovatively reported a self-assembly method for surface decoration by depositing TA/Fe coatings on the surface of desalted duck egg white nanoparticles (DEWN), further studying the oil/water interfacial properties of the modified particles. The results showed that the ratio and concentration of TA to Fe could modulate interfacial properties.

Despite the advances in the development of therapeutic wearable wound-healing patches, lack self-healing properties and strong adhesion to diabetic skin, hindering their effectiveness. We propose a unique, wearable patch made from a 3D organo-hydrogel nanocomposite containing polydopamine, titanium dioxide nanoparticles, and silver quantum dots (PDA-TiO@Ag). The designed patch exhibits ultra-stretchable, exceptional-self-healing, self-adhesive, ensuring conformal contact with the skin even during movement.

Choline is an important molecule in monitoring food safety and infant nutrition. Here, we report Ce nanogels synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) employing Ce-coordinated acryloyl-lysine polymer brushes (Ce@SiO NGs) as highly efficient cascade nanozymes for colorimetric detection of choline. The synthesized Ce@SiO NGs demonstrated remarkable peroxidase-like activity with a porous exterior, which are essential to entrap choline oxidase (COx) to yield COx@Ce@SiO NGs and construct a cascade reaction system to detect choline.
