Quadruplets are at elevated physical risks at prenatal, perinatal, and postnatal levels, relative to twins. A brief review of this area is followed by discussion of a female quadruplet with three co-quadruplet brothers. Next, several timely twin research reports are examined. The topics include antenatal corticosteroids and twins' neonatal outcomes, the meaning of fatherhood in families with twins, what doppelgängers (look-alikes) reveal about physical and behavioral similarity, and monozygotic (MZ) co-twin discordance for asymmetric pigmented paravenous chorioretinal atrophy. A lawsuit involving alleged cheating on a medical school examination by identical twins is also reviewed. General interest stories cover opposite-sex twin Holocaust survivors, twin models at a Gucci fashion show, twins with different fathers, reunited female twins who entered the same convent, the death of an MZ female twin soldier during training, and the surgical separation of conjoined twins in Brazil.

Department of Biomedical Engineering, McGill University, Montreal, QC, Canada.

Background: Randomized placebo-controlled trials (RCTs) are the gold standard to evaluate efficacy of new drug treatments for Alzheimer's disease. For example, the United States FDA approved the brain amyloid-targeting drug lecanemab following CLARITY AD, Biogen and Eisai's Phase 3 RCT. However, recruiting enough participants for a high-powered and demographically representative trial is difficult and expensive.

Background: In Alzheimer's Disease (AD) trials, clinical scales are used to assess treatment effect in patients. Minimizing statistical uncertainty of trial outcomes is an important consideration to increase statistical power. Machine learning models can leverage baseline data to create AI-generated digital twins - individualized predictions (or prognostic scores) of how each patient's clinical outcomes may change during a trial assuming they received placebo.

Simultaneous Concentration and T Mapping of Brain Metabolites by Fast Multi-Echo Spectroscopic Imaging.

NMR Biomed

February 2025

MR Methodology, Department for Diagnostic and Interventional Neuroradiology, University of Bern, Bern, Switzerland.

The purpose of this study was to produce metabolite-specific T and concentration maps in a clinically compatible time frame. A multi-TE 2D MR spectroscopic imaging (MRSI) experiment (multi-echo single-shot MRSI [MESS-MRSI]) deployed truncated and partially sampled multi-echo trains from single scans and was combined with simultaneous multiparametric model fitting. It was tested in vivo for the brain in five healthy subjects.

Selective Fetal Growth Restriction Leading to Cerebral Injury in Monochorionic Twins: A Case Report.

Cureus

December 2024

Neonatology Department, Daniel de Matos Maternity, Coimbra Local Health Unit, Coimbra, PRT.

Monochorionic twin pregnancies carry a risk of perinatal complications due to shared placental anastomoses, which can cause uneven blood distribution and lead to conditions like selective fetal growth restriction (sFGR). This case describes a monochorionic pregnancy complicated by preeclampsia and late-onset sFGR of twin B. Labor was prematurely induced and a 45% weight discordance between the twins was confirmed.

Objective: To evaluate the impact of twin dating by ultrasound-measured crown-rump length (CRL) of the larger (CRL-L), smaller (CRL-S) or mean twin measurement (CRL-M) on the rates of preterm birth (PTB) and detection of small for gestational age (SGA) births.

Design: A retrospective cohort study.

Setting: A tertiary fetal medicine centre (London, UK).
