When the rat olfactory mucosa is treated with concanavalin A, it subsequently shows diminished sensitivity towards 60% of the 112 odorants tested (as judged by the amplitude of the electro-olfactogram response). Odorants containing four to six carbon atoms tend to show the largest (absolute) diminutions, suggesting a receptor for this kind of odorant, although the structural specificity is weak. The receptor seems to be of particular importance in the detection of thiols, carboxylic acids and hydrocarbons of the above size, since these compounds loose the highest proportion of their original signal. The concanavalin A appears to be binding to the glycan of one or more cell-surface proteins. The binding may be at, or close to, at least one odorant receptor.

Spontaneous and stimulated production of cytokines by peripheral blood cells obtained from the caudal vein of male Wistar rats was assessed before testing their resistance to oxygen deficiency in a decompression chamber. To study the spontaneous production of cytokines, heparinized blood cells were incubated in a culture medium (24 h, 5% CO, 37°C) and the content of proinflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNFα and anti-inflammatory IL-10 in the culture medium was assessed by ELISA. To stimulate cytokine production, blood cells were incubated for 24 h with LPS, phytohemagglutinin, and concanavalin A at final concentrations of 2, 4, and 4 μg, respectively.

While -glycosylation of mitochondrial proteins has been detected by untargeted MS-analyses, the physiological existence and roles of mitochondrial protein -linked glycosylation remain under debate. Here, we report that MRS2, a mitochondrial inner membrane protein that functions as the high flux magnesium transporter, is -glycosylated to various extents depending on cellular bioenergetic status.
