JBJS convened a symposium to discuss the reporting of sex and gender in research studies as an imperative to improve research methods and results to benefit all patients. Barriers to improved reporting include a lack of societal and cultural acceptance of its need; a lack of education regarding appropriate terminology and appropriate statistical methods and efficient study designs; a need for increased research funding to support larger group sizes; unknown concordance of cell and animal models with humans to reflect biologic variables such as sex; and a lack of understanding of key considerations of gender, race, and other social determinants of health and how these factors intersect. Attention to developing and disseminating best-practice statistical methods and to educating investigators (at all career levels), reviewers, funders, editors, and staff in their proper implementation will aid reporting.

December 2024

Department of Health, Ethics and Society, Mental Health and Neuroscience Research Institute, Faculty of Health Medicine and Life Sciences, Maastricht University, Maastricht, the Netherlands.

The prevention of dementia is increasingly a task for public health promotion and aims at the general public. This likewise holds for potentially modifiable lifestyle risk factors and biomarkers indicating susceptibility. This commentary argues that from a public health ethical perspective, there is a significant overlap between the implications and requirements of the biomedical domain and lifestyle approaches.

The Australian Podiatry Board's proposal to change the title 'podiatric surgeon' to 'surgical podiatrist' lacks evidence and is contrary to broader healthcare reform agendas. The current title 'podiatric surgeon' reflects scope of practice. Instead of a title change, regulators should focus on removing barriers to effective collaborative care.

Biomimetic Alumina Film for Passive Daytime Radiative Cooling.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

December 2024

Ministry of Education Key Laboratory for the Green Preparation and Application of Functional Materials, Hubei University, Wuhan 430062, People's Republic of China.

Passive daytime radiative cooling is receiving more and more attention as a cooling method that does not consume energy to cool objects. However, most radiative cooling materials require the mixing of multiple particles, which increases the manufacturing process requirements. Most radiative cooling materials are susceptible to outdoor abrasion, pollution, and UV exposure, which leads to decreased performance.
