Background: Limited data exist on the reliability, efficacy and safety of ultrasound-guided transbronchial cryobiopsy for suspicious mediastinal and hilar lesions. This study shares findings from implementing this method and compares the results with those of the standard endobronchial ultrasound-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA).

Methods: Patients undergoing diagnostic bronchoscopy for mediastinal or hilar lesions in four Swiss centres were included.

Systematic Review of Image-guided Thermal Ablation for Treatment of High-Risk Patients with Stage I Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer.

Semin Thorac Cardiovasc Surg

December 2024

Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. Pittsburgh, PA. Electronic address:

Image-guided thermal ablation (IGTA) applied to pulmonary pathology is an alternative to surgery in high-risk patients with stage I non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Its application to lung neoplasm was first introduced in 2001 and has been implemented to treat metastatic disease to the lung or in select medically inoperable patients with peripheral stage I NSCLC. IGTA may also be an alternative to treat stage I NSCLC in non-operable patients with interstitial lung disease in whom a radiation modality is deemed too high risk.

Objectives: Eyelid margin lesions cause discomfort by impeding both central and peripheral vision, depending on their position on the eyelids, thus hindering everyday routines. However, surgical excision, radiofrequency, electrocautery, and cryosurgery are employed for treatment, although they are complicated and have functional limitations. Carbon dioxide (CO) lasers were used to assess the efficacy, safety, and patient satisfaction with CO laser ablation in managing eyelid margin lesions.

A Trifecta-Based Evaluation of Patients Treated with Percutaneous Thermal Ablation of Small Renal Masses.

J Endourol

November 2024

Department of Urology, Fondazione IRCCS Ca' Granda Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, Milan, Italy.

Scoring metrics are important to compare outcomes of different percutaneous treatments for small renal masses (RMs). The concept of trifecta (no complications, kidney function preservation, and absence of local recurrence) has been recently introduced in percutaneous thermal ablation of RM. In this context, previous studies have shown that cryoablation (CA) and microwave ablation (MWA) have similar outcomes.

Purpose: The aim of this study is to compare perioperative, functional, and oncological outcomes between robot-assisted partial nephrectomy (RAPN) and cryoablation (CRYO), based on a 3-year experience at our Institution. Additionally, a secondary aim is to conduct a comparative cost analysis between the two procedures.

Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted, including patients who underwent RAPN or CRYO between January 2020 and December 2023.
