Herein, an approach to track the process of autorepeating bipolar reactions and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) on a micro gold bipolar electrode (BPE) is established. Once blocking the channel of the sub-micropipette tip, the formed gold microparticle is polarized into the wireless BPE, which induces the dissolution of the gold at the anode and the HER at the cathode. The current response shows a periodic behavior with three regions: the bubble generation region (I), the bubble rupture/generation region (II), and the channel opening region (III). After a stable low baseline current of region I, a series of positive spike signals caused by single H nanobubbles rupture/generation are recorded standing for the beginning of region II. Meanwhile, the dissolution of the gold blocking at the orifice will create a new channel, increasing the baseline current for region III, where the synthesis of gold occurs again, resulting in another periodic response. Finite element simulations are applied to unveil the mechanism thermodynamically. In addition, the integral charge of the H nanobubbles in region II corresponds to the consumption of the anode gold. It simultaneously monitors autorepeating bipolar reactions of a single gold microparticle and HER of a single H nanobubble electrochemically, which reveals an insightful physicochemical mechanism in nanoscale confinement and makes the glass nanopore an ideal candidate to further reveal the heterogeneity of catalytic capability at the single particle level.

The unique characteristics of biological structures depend on the behavior of DNA sequences confined in a microscale cell under environmental fluctuations and dissipation. Here, we report a prominent difference in fluorescence from dye-modified single-stranded DNA in a light-induced assembly of DNA-functionalized heterogeneous probe particles in a microwell of several microliters in volume. Strong optical forces from the Mie scattering of microparticles accelerated hybridization, and the photothermal effect from the localized surface plasmons in gold nanoparticles enhanced specificity to reduce the fluorescence intensity of dye-modified DNA to a few %, even in a one-base mismatched sequence, enabling us to clearly highlight the single nucleotide polymorphisms in DNA.

A novel employment of single particle-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (SP-ICP-MS) was developed, where a microextraction (ME) probe is used to sample nanoparticles from a surface and analyze them in a single analytical step. The effects of several parameters on the performance of ME-SP-ICP-MS were investigated, including the flow rate, choice of carrier solution, particle size, and the design of the microextraction probe head itself. The optimized ME-SP-ICP-MS technique was used to compare the extraction efficiency (EE, defined as the ratio of particles measured to particles deposited on the surface) of the commercial probe head to a newly designed SP polyether ether ketone (PEEK) probe head.

Background: The multifunctional cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) plays a pivotal role in chronic and acute inflammatory responses, underscoring the importance of accurately determining IL-6 levels for early diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of inflammation.
Results: This study developed a versatile and innovative single-particle surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) sensing platform for the precise and sensitive quantification of IL-6 in complex samples using a novel one-pot synthesized, silver ions-doped three-dimensional porous gold microparticles (PGMs) with abundant hot spots for robust SERS enhancement. By rationally designing rich cytosine-Ag-cytosine base pairs between IL-6 aptamers and complementary chains on the PGMs, we harnessed the SERS-enhancing effect to achieve highly sensitive and specific IL-6 quantification within a wide range of 10 to 10 mg/mL and a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.

The design and development of nanoparticle- and microparticle-based delivery systems incorporating carotenoids into carrier materials offers multiple advantages, including enhancing the bio-efficacy of these compounds due to improving their bioaccessibility and bioavailability. This study introduced pitanga saponified carotenoid extract (PSCE) and pitanga non-saponified carotenoid extract (PSCE) in a 12 % zein/1 %PEO solution and electrospun for fiber production. Then, the fibers were characterized, and their bioaccessibility and bioavailability were also evaluated.
