The molecular mobility of acetonitrile intercalated into the inter-plane space of graphite oxide was studied using the spin probe technique. It was revealed that two types of intercalated substance - liquid-like and solid-like - are simultaneously present in between the oxidized graphene planes, and their ratio depends on temperature. The micro-viscosity of liquid-like intercalated acetonitrile was found to be higher than that of bulk acetonitrile and depends on the amount of intercalated liquid.

Vertebrate oocyte polarity has been observed for two centuries and is essential for embryonic axis formation and germline specification, yet its underlying mechanisms remain unknown. In oocyte polarization, critical RNA-protein (RNP) granules delivered to the oocyte's vegetal pole are stored by the Balbiani body (Bb), a membraneless organelle conserved across species from insects to humans. However, the mechanisms of Bb formation are still unclear.

Breast tumors are typically surrounded by extracellular matrix (ECM), which is heterogeneous, not just structurally but also mechanically. Conventional rheometry is inadequate for describing cell-size-level spatial differences in ECM mechanics that are evident at micrometer scales. Optical tweezers and passive microrheometry provide a microscale resolution for the purpose but are incapable of measuring ECM viscoelasticity (the liquid-like viscous and solid-like elastic characteristics) at stiffness levels as found in breast tumor biopsies.

Bacterial ribonucleoprotein bodies (BR-bodies) are dynamic biomolecular condensates that play a pivotal role in RNA metabolism. We investigated how BR-bodies significantly influence mRNA fate by transitioning between liquid- and solid-like states in response to stress. With a combination of single-molecule and bulk fluorescence microscopy, biochemical assays, and quantitative analyses, we determine that BR-bodies promote efficient mRNA decay in a liquid-like condensate during exponential growth.

The development of polysaccharide-based wound dressings that are easy to prepare, adhere to tissue, adapt to diverse shapes and exhibit tunable mechanical properties holds significant clinical interest. This study introduced a simple spontaneous liquid-liquid phase separation technique employing low-molecular-weight and high polyion concentration of chitosan (CS) and hyaluronic acid (HA) to fabricate CS/HA coacervates. Upon increasing the molecular weight of chitosan from 7 kDa to 250 kDa, a transition in the CS/HA coacervates from liquid-like state to an elastic liquid and eventually to a solid-like state was observed.
