Interstitial solutes, such as carbon in steels, are effective solid-solution hardening agents. These alloying elements are believed to occupy the octahedral interstices in body-centered-cubic (bcc) metals. Using deep-sub-angstrom-resolution electron ptychography, here the first experimental evidence to directly observe individual oxygen atoms in a highly concentrated bcc solid solution-the (TiNbZr) O C N medium-entropy alloy (MEA)-is provided, whereby the interstitial sites in which the oxygen atoms are located are discerned. In addition to oxygen interstitials residing in octahedral sites, the first unambiguous evidence of a switch in preference to the unusual tetrahedral sites at high oxygen concentrations is shown. This shift away from octahedral occupancy is explained as resulting from the extra cost of strain energy when the requisite displacement of the host atoms is deterred in the presence of nearby octahedral interstitials.

This study investigates the surface energies and work function changes in ZnGaO(111) surfaces with different atomic terminations using ab initio density functional theory. It explores the interactions of gas molecules such as NO, NO, and CHCOCH with Ga-terminated, O-terminated, and Ga-Zn-O-terminated surfaces. This study reveals previously unreported insights into how O-terminated surfaces exhibit enhanced reactivity with NO, resulting in significant work function changes of +6.

Although commonly appreciated for their anti-oxidative and neuroprotective properties, flavonoids can also exhibit pro-oxidative activity, potentially reducing cell survival, particularly in the presence of metal ions. Disrupted copper homeostasis is a known contributor to neuronal dysfunction through oxidative stress induction. This study investigated the effects of myricitrin (1-20 μg/mL) on copper-induced toxicity (0.

Photocatalytic water disinfection technology is highly promising in off-grid areas due to abundant year-round solar irradiance. However, the practical use of powdered photocatalysts is impeded by limited recovery and inefficient inactivation of stress-resistant bacteria in oligotrophic surface water. Here we prepare a floatable monolithic photocatalyst with ZIF-8-NH loaded Ag single atoms and nanoparticles (Ag/ZIF).

C-C bond cleavage and recombination provide an efficient strategy for the modification and reconstruction of molecule structures. Herein, we present a method for achieving amidation of aryl C(sp)-H bond through the cleavage and recombination of C-C triple bond with the involvement of nitrous acid esters. This method marks the instance of precise and controlled stepwise cleavage of C-C triple bond, offering a fresh perspective for the cleavage of such bonds.

Suppressing Jahn-Teller distortion of MnO via B-Ni dual single-atoms integration for methane catalytic combustion.

Nat Commun

School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Key Laboratory for Green Chemical Technology of Ministry of Education, Tianjin University, Tianjin, 300072, China.

Precisely managing electron transfer pathways throughout the catalytic reaction is paramount for bolstering both the efficacy and endurance of catalysts, offering a pivotal solution to addressing concerns surrounding host structure destabilization and cycling life degradation. This paper describes the integration of B-Ni dual single-atoms within MnO channels to serve as an electronic reservoir to direct the electron transfer route during methane catalytic combustion. Comprehensive analysis discovers that B atoms weaken the interaction between O and Mn atoms by forming bonds with lattice oxygen atoms.
