Chronic infection by several "high-risk" human papillomavirus (HPV) types has been causally implicated in several forms of anogenital and oropharyngeal cancers. Now, HPV42, which is usually classified as a "low-risk" type, can be listed as the main cause of digital papillary adenocarcinoma, an uncommon malignant tumor of the fingers and toes.
