The Hadamard-Rybczynski equation describes the steady-state buoyant rise velocity of an unconfined spherical bubble in a viscous liquid. This solution has been experimentally validated for the case where the liquid viscosity is held constant. Here, we extend this result for non-isothermal conditions, by developing a solution for bubble position in which we account for the time-dependent liquid viscosity, liquid and gas densities, and bubble radius. We validate this solution using experiments in which spherical bubbles are created in a molten silicate liquid by cutting gas cavities into glass sheets, which are stacked, then heated through the glass transition interval. The bubble-bearing liquid, which has a strongly temperature-dependent viscosity, is subjected to various heating and cooling programs such that the bubble rise velocity varies through the experiment. We find that our predictions match the final observed position of the bubble measured in blocks of cooled glass to within the experimental uncertainty, even after the application of a complex temperature-time pathway. We explore applications of this solution for industrial, artistic, and natural volcanological applied problems.

Spontaneous Cargo Transport via Sliding Bubbles on a Superhydrophobic Wire.

Langmuir

December 2024

Zhejiang Provincial Key Laboratory of Flow Measurement Technology, China Jiliang University, Hangzhou 310018, China.

The transportation and carrying behavior of underwater bubbles have been widely used for an underwater microactuator, cargo displacement assembly, and drug delivery. This study explores a method for underwater cargo transportation using sliding bubbles as a vehicle with directionally guided superhydrophobic wires. By exploitation of the adhesion between superhydrophobic surfaces and bubble interfaces, a bubble is able to transport a superhydrophobic O-ring along a superhydrophobic wire, effectively delivering the O-ring to the water surface.

Direct current biased optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DCO-OFDM) is widely used in blue light-emitting diode (LED)-based underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC), but the limited LED bandwidth leads to nonlinear distortions at higher frequencies. Using experiments, this paper proposes and validates a differential pre-emphasis (DPE) scheme for OFDM signal transmission in underwater channels to mitigate LED modulation bandwidth-induced nonlinearity, therefore improving transmission system performance. It is shown that the optimum DPE value leads to shorter rise time and fall time of the received signal and also avoids over- and under-shoots.

Numerical simulation of bubble rising behavior in a tannin-based foaming precursor resin.

Heliyon

November 2024

Yunnan Provincial Key Laboratory of Wood Adhesives and Glued Products, Southwest Forestry University, Kunming, 650224, China.

A two-dimensional volume of fluid (VOF) model was developed to simulate the deformation of the bubble, the end speed of bubble rise, the distance of bubble rise and the movement trajectory in different initial conditions of tannin-based foaming precursor resin. In this study, bubble rising and coalescence characteristics are connected with parameters of the resin, especially viscosity, surface tension, the initial radius and location of the bubble also matter. The result shows that rising velocity of the bubble decreased as the viscosity increased, and at the same time, the flow rate of the bubble was lower.

Bubble Drainage Assisted Fabrication of Polyamide Membranes with Crater-like Structures for Efficient Desalination.

Nano Lett

Key Laboratory for Green Chemical Technology of Ministry of Education, School of Chemical Engineering and Technology, Tianjin University, Tianjin 300072, China.

Bubble drainage (BD) occurs in various natural phenomena and industrial activities, in which bubbles rise toward the water surface and create a progressively thinned two-sided liquid film, called a lamella. Surfactant, as an important regulator in the BD process, not only assembles on both sides of the lamellae, generating a configuration of lamellae sandwiched by monolayers of surfactants (lamellae/MS), but also induces interfacial deformation by lowering interfacial tension. Herein, we developed a strategy of BD assisted interfacial polymerization for the fabrication of polyamide (PA) membranes.

Effects of ultrasound on bubble dynamic behavior of flow boiling in microchannel.

Ultrason Sonochem

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates how ultrasonic parameters influence bubble dynamics during flow boiling in microchannels, which is important for cooling microelectronic devices, but the effects of ultrasound on bubbles are still not well understood.
  • - Key findings indicate that the Bjerknes forces play a critical role in bubble behavior, with the primary force facilitating rapid bubble detachment and the secondary force causing bubbles to slide rather than lift off.
  • - Increases in ultrasonic pressure and frequency significantly enhance bubble growth and detachment characteristics, leading to improved thermal management efficiency in microchannels, while surface tension slightly affects sliding velocity and growth time.
