The glutathione (GSH) and thioredoxin (Trx) systems regulate cellular redox homeostasis and maintain antioxidant defense in most eukaryotes. We earlier reported the absence of gene coding for the glutathione reductase (GR) enzyme of the GSH system in the facultative air-breathing catfish, Clarias magur. Here, we identified three thioredoxin reductase (TrxR) genes, one of which was later confirmed as a thioredoxin glutathione reductase (TGR). We then characterized the novel recombinant TGR enzyme of C. magur (CmTGR). The tissue-specific expression of the txnrd genes and the tissue-specific activity of the TrxR enzyme were analyzed. The recombinant CmTGR is a dimer of ~133 kDa. The protein showed TrxR activity with 5,5'-diothiobis (2-nitrobenzoic acid) reduction assay with a K of 304.40 μM and GR activity with a K of 58.91 μM. Phylogenetic analysis showed that the CmTGR was related to the TrxRs of fishes and distantly related to the TGRs of platyhelminth parasites. The structural analysis revealed the conserved glutaredoxin active site and FAD- and NADPH-binding sites. To our knowledge, this is the first report of the presence of a TGR in any fish. This unusual presence of TGR in C. magur is crucial as it helps maintain redox homeostasis under environmental stressors-induced oxidative stress.

Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma is one of the highly fatal cancers and poses a serious threat to human health. Ferroptosis has been widely studied and proved to have an important role in tumor suppression, providing new avenues for cancer therapy; glutathione peroxidase 4(GPX4) and selenoprotein thioredoxin reductase(TXNRD1) are important regulatory targets in ferroptosis.Warburg effect is one of the important energy sources for cancer hypermetabolism, and pyruvate kinase isoenzyme 2 (PKM2) is a key metabolism enzyme that is important in this effect.

Background: HSCT conditioning regimens cause massive lysis of hematopoietic cells with release of toxic intracellular molecules into the circulation.
Objectives: To describe the response to oxidative stress early after hemopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) and assess the association of early oxidative stress with later transplant outcomes.
Study Design: Key components of in the body's physiological response to oxidative stress were studied in a cohort of 122 consecutive pediatric allogeneic HSCT recipients.

This study aimed to explore the mechanism by which Zn retards Fe toxicity by analyzing the morphological, photosynthetic, and chloroplast physiological parameters of wheat seedlings treated with either single or combined Zn and Fe. Different behavior of the seedlings was observed under untreated and treated conditions. The most discriminating quantitative traits were associated with leaf area, biomass dry mass and fresh mass, net photosynthetic rate, intercellular CO concentration, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate of seedlings, Hill reaction, Mg-ATPase and Ca-ATPase activities, malondialdehyde and O contents, and glutathione reductase, ascorbate peroxidase, peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase activities and their gene expression in the seedling chloroplast.

Few studies have explored the impact of blue light-emitting diode (BL) irradiation combined with different storage temperatures on antioxidant defense and cell wall metabolic activities related to the quality deterioration of postharvest strawberries. This study investigates the effects of BL exposure as a non-chemical preservation strategy to improve the postharvest quality of strawberries stored at 22 °C and 8 °C. Over a 10-day storage period, BL irradiation significantly reduced respiratory and ethylene production rates, while preserving fruit firmness and increasing the contents of soluble sugar and total phenol at both temperatures.
