Towards Truly "Bespoke" Robotic Surgery: Vessel-Sparing Sigmoidectomy.

Surg Innov

Department of General and Mini-invasive Surgery, Sanit Camillo Hospital, Trento, Italy.

Published: August 2023

The proposed video-vignette represents a later step towards a truly robotically surgical approach, that combines oncological radicality and preservation of optimal blood flow during a sigmoidectomy for cancer. This totally robotic vessel-sparing approach doesn't result in longer operative times, higher blood loss or extended length of hospitalization.

Implementing enclosed sterile integrated robotic platforms to improve cell-based screening for drug discovery.

SLAS Technol

December 2024

Discovery Biology & Screening, GSK R&D, Stevenage, Hertfordshire, UK. Electronic address:

At GSK, we have implemented custom integrated robotics platforms housed in bespoke biosafety enclosures to augment our capabilities in advanced cellular screening. Here we present and discuss the impact of one such system, the Cellular Automated Screening Platform (CASPer). We evaluate the benefits of implementing specific processes on CASPer that include increasing the throughput of safety screening assays and improving data integrity when testing complex in vitro 3D primary human hepatocyte models.

Autonomous mobile robots for exploratory synthetic chemistry.

Nature

November 2024

Leverhulme Research Centre for Functional Materials Design and Materials Innovation Factory, University of Liverpool, Liverpool, UK.

Autonomous laboratories can accelerate discoveries in chemical synthesis, but this requires automated measurements coupled with reliable decision-making. Most autonomous laboratories involve bespoke automated equipment, and reaction outcomes are often assessed using a single, hard-wired characterization technique. Any decision-making algorithms must then operate using this narrow range of characterization data.

Novel multimodal sensing and machine learning strategies to classify cognitive workload in laparoscopic surgery.

Eur J Surg Oncol

Hamlyn Centre for Robotic Surgery, Imperial College London, London, SW7 2AZ, UK; Department of Surgery and Cancer, St Mary's Hospital, Imperial College London, London, UK. Electronic address:

Background: Surgeons can experience elevated cognitive workload (CWL) during surgery due to various factors including operative technicalities and the environmental demands of the operating theatre. This can result in poorer outcomes and have a detrimental effect on surgeon well-being. The objective measurement of CWL provides a potential solution to facilitate classification of workload levels, however results are variable when physiological measures are used in isolation.

Knitting turns yarn, a 1D material, into a 2D fabric that is flexible, durable, and can be patterned to adopt a wide range of 3D geometries. Like other mechanical metamaterials, the elasticity of knitted fabrics is an emergent property of the local stitch topology and pattern that cannot solely be attributed to the yarn itself. Thus, knitting can be viewed as an additive manufacturing technique that allows for stitch-by-stitch programming of elastic properties and has applications in many fields ranging from soft robotics and wearable electronics to engineered tissue and architected materials.

Kinematic Analysis and Application to Control Logic Development for RHex Robot Locomotion.

Sensors (Basel)

March 2024

Networked Systems Group, Delft University of Technology, Building 28, Van Mourik Broekmanweg 6, 2628 XE Delft, The Netherlands.

This study explores the kinematic model of the popular RHex hexapod robots which have garnered considerable interest for their locomotion capabilities. We study the influence of tripod trajectory parameters on the RHex robot's movement, aiming to craft a precise kinematic model that enhances walking mechanisms. This model serves as a cornerstone for refining robot control strategies, enabling tailored performance enhancements or specific motion patterns.
