This study developed a rapid and easy analytical method for the simultaneous determination of nine synthetic colourants (SCs) in capsule dietary supplements. Sample pretreatment involved thermal treatment to dissolve gelatin, using the enzymes protease and amylase to prevent the gelation of gelatin and fat-soluble substances removal using petroleum ether. The method was linear ( ≥0.999), with LOD of 0.009-0.029 μg/mL and LOQ of 0.42-1.40 μg/g. Recovery ranged from 90.9 to 108.9%. The relative expanded measurement uncertainty ranged from 4.1 to 6.3%. Allura Red AC (R40) and Brilliant Blue FCF (B1) were commonly detected in 20 of the 28 samples. Up to six SCs such as Tartrazine (Y4), Sunset yellow (Y5), Amaranth (R2), Erythrosine B (R3), R40 and B1 were detected in a single sample, ranging from 30.5 to 40.2 μg/g. Total content of SCs in various capsule supplements ranged from 0.3 to 73.7 μg/g.

Indigo is a widely used colorant available from natural and synthetic origin. It is practically insoluble in water. Indigo can reach aquatic sediments through wastewater discharges from dyeing processes, terrestrial compartments from the treatment sludges used as biosolids and dyed textiles disposed in landfills.

Polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) measures the polarization state of backscattered light from tissues and provides valuable insights into the birefringence properties of biological tissues. Contrastive unpaired translation (CUT) was used in this study to generate a synthetic PS-OCT image from a single OCT image. The challenges related to extensive data requirements relying on labeled datasets using only pixel-wise correlations that make it difficult to efficiently regenerate the periodic patterns observed in PS-OCT images were addressed.

Fruit features are crucial for plant propagation, population growth, biodiversity preservation, and evolutionary survival. However, the synergistic regulatory mechanisms underlying the development of fruit traits such as color, shape and duration are unclear. Euscaphis japonica, whose fruits have a red-winged pericarp and persist for a long period of time, is an important ornamental plant in eastern Asia.

Pyranoflavylium cations are synthetic analogues of pyranoanthocyanins, the much more color-stable compounds that are formed spontaneously from grape anthocyanins during the maturation of red wines. In the present work, our studies of the photophysical properties of pyranoanthocyanin analogues are extended to include nine pyranoflavylium cations substituted with one or two bromo and/or iodo heavy atoms. The room temperature fluorescence, 77 K fluorescence and phosphorescence, triplet formation in solution, and sensitized singlet oxygen formation, with excited state acidity suppressed by the addition of trifluoroacetic acid, are compared to those of similar pyranoflavylium cations that do not contain a heavy atom.

A total of 57 European, Canadian and North American postage stamps, all in red shades, were analyzed with the main goal of unraveling which pigments or dyes were used to produce the red color in the period dated from 1841 to 1899. Both non-destructive techniques, including X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF), Fiber Optics Reflectance Spectra (FORS), and Steady State Fluorescence Spectroscopy, and destructive methods such as High-Performance Liquid Chromatography coupled with Diode-Array Detection (HPLC-DAD) and Electrospray Ionization High-Resolution Mass Spectrometry (ESI-HRMS), were utilized for a comprehensive analysis. The examined red shades were identified as originating from either a single pigment or dye, or a combination of both.
