Phloroglucinol and derived compounds comprise a huge class of secondary metabolites widely distributed in plants and brown algae. A vast array of biological activities, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anticancer has been associated to this class of compounds. In this review, the available data on the antiviral and antibacterial capacity of phloroglucinols have been analyzed. Some of these compounds and derivatives show important antimicrobial properties . Phloroglucinols have been shown to be effective against viruses, such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), herpes or enterovirus, and preliminary data through docking analysis suggest that they can be effective against SARS-CoV-19. Also, some phloroglucinols derivatives have shown antibacterial effects against diverse bacteria strains, including and , and (semi)synthetic development of novel compounds have led to phloroglucinols with a significantly increased biological activity. However, therapeutic use of these compounds is hindered by the absence of studies and scarcity of information on their mechanisms of action, and hence further research efforts are required. On the basis of this consideration, our work aims to gather data regarding the efficacy of natural-occurring and synthetic phloroglucinol derivatives as antiviral and antibacterial agents against human pathogens, which have been published during the last three decades. The recollection of results reported in this review represents a valuable source of updated information that will potentially help researchers in the development of novel antimicrobial agents.

Background: , a notable plant species, has garnered interest for its medicinal properties, including anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral effects. A vaccine for Chikungunia virus is still under evaluation and no specific antiviral drug has been licensed to date.
Objective: The work investigated antiviral activity of ethyl acetate (EAEF) and methanolic (EMF) extracts from leaves in mammalian cells exposed to (CHIKV).
Nirmatrelvir/ritonavir is a novel drug combination authorized by the US Food and Drug Administration for the treatment of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). This report describes the case of a patient with a prior history of kidney transplantation who received nirmatrelvir/ritonavir. In this case, sirolimus use was successfully stopped before nirmatrelvir/ritonavir treatment, and the nirmatrelvir/ritonavir trough concentration was determined.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) present promising alternatives for addressing bacterial and viral multidrug resistance due to their distinctive properties. Understanding the mechanisms of these compounds is essential for achieving this objective. Therefore, this comprehensive review aims to highlight primary natural sources of AMPs and elucidate various aspects of the modes of action of antiviral and antibacterial peptides (ABPs).

Betulinic acid (BA) is a natural compound obtained from plant extracts and is known for its diverse pharmacological effects, including anti-tumor, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anti-atherosclerotic properties. Its potential in anti-tumor therapy has garnered considerable attention, particularly for the treatment of breast, lung, and liver cancers. However, the clinical utility of BA is greatly hindered by its poor water solubility, low bioavailability, and off-target toxicity.

Introduction: Long-acting injectable cabotegravir (CAB-LA) for pre-exposure prophylaxis significantly reduced HIV acquisition in HPTN 084. We report on the safety and CAB-LA pharmacokinetics in pregnant women during the blinded period of HPTN 084.
Methods: Participants were randomized 1:1 to either active cabotegravir (CAB) plus tenofovir disoproxil fumarate/emtricitabine (TDF/FTC) placebo or active TDF/FTC plus CAB placebo.
