Behavioral economic demand models quantify the extent to which an organism defends its consumption of a commodity. Commodity purchase tasks permit humans a quick yet psychometrically sound approach to assessing commodity demand for various retail products. Operant behavioral economic literature suggests economy type (open vs closed) can significantly alter demand, yet this effect is largely undocumented in the commodity purchase task literature. In this study, we leveraged the market pressures for retail goods (hand lotion and sanitizer; paper towels and toilet paper; soda and water) resulting from SARS-CoV-2 into a natural experiment comparing within-subject demand across two time-points during the pandemic using a crowdsourced approach. Results suggest that hypothetical commodity purchase tasks are sensitive to extra-experimental market pressures (e.g., scarcity due to the closing of economies), adding additional confidence to the self-report nature of purchase task responding and providing further construct validity to these approaches.

Low-and middle-income countries (LMICs) account for a significant proportion of the burden of disease for communicable illnesses globally; with malaria, tuberculosis (TB), and HIV/AIDS being the leading causes of death. Despite this disparity, LMICs often have limited or delayed access to newer optimal health products compared to high-income countries (HICs). This limitation in access, driven by a myriad of barriers, undermines the potential health benefits that could be gained in LMICs through the introduction of better health products.

Obesity may be more prevalent among populations who are of low socioeconomic status, have limited access to nutrient-dense foods, or both. One such population is justice-involved youth. This series of translational experiments builds on previous research on food reinforcement and behavioral demand by (a) assaying demand for snack foods among justice-involved adolescents and (b) evaluating the effect of a nutrition intervention on justice-involved adolescents' demand for healthier alternatives.

Examining the Implementation Experience of the Universal Health Coverage Pilot in Kenya.

Health Syst Reform

December 2024

Health Economics Research Unit, KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Program, Nairobi, Kenya.

The Kenyan government implemented a Universal Health Coverage (UHC) pilot project in four (out of 47) counties in 2019 to address supply-side gaps and remove user fees at county referral hospitals. The objective of this study was to examine the UHC pilot implementation experience using a mixed-methods cross-sectional study in the four UHC pilot counties (Isiolo, Kisumu, Machakos, and Nyeri). We conducted exit interviews ( = 316) with health facility clients, in-depth interviews ( = 134) with national and county-level health sector stakeholders, focus group discussions ( = 22) with community members, and document reviews.

Development of an updated, comprehensive food composition database for Australian-grown horticultural commodities.

Institute for Physical Activity and Nutrition (IPAN), School of Exercise and Nutrition Sciences, Deakin University, Geelong, VIC 3220, Australia; Curtin School of Population Health, Curtin University, Kent Street, Bentley, WA 6102, Australia. Electronic address:

Australia supplies horticultural commodities to domestic and international markets; however, food composition data for many commodities are outdated or unavailable. We produced a nationally representative dataset of up to 148 nutrient components in 92 Australian-grown fruit (fresh n = 39, dried n = 6), vegetables (n = 43) and nuts (n = 4) by replacing outdated data (pre-2000), confirming concentrations of important nutrients and retaining relevant existing data. Primary samples (n = 902) were purchased during peak growing season in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth between June 2021 and May 2022.

Energy commodities spillover analysis for assessing the functioning of the European Union Emissions Trading System trade network of carbon allowances.

Sci Rep

September 2024

Department of Management, Economics and Industrial Engineering, Politecnico di Milano, 20156, Milan, Italy.

The European Union Emissions Trading System (EU ETS) is designed to promote carbon reduction in a cost-effective and economically efficient manner. To meet their compliance requirements, participants within the EU ETS can either invest in carbon abatement, thereby improving their environmental performances, or purchase carbon allowances from the market. Our analysis aims to investigate the structural features of the EU ETS trade network of allowances and assess its robustness to spillovers propagated from energy commodities.
