As a widely used industrial additive of plastic products, phthalate ester (PAE) plasticizers can easily migrate into food, threatening human health. In this work, we proposed a rapid, precise, and reliable method to detect PAE plasticizers in edible oils by using surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technology. A two-dimensional (2D) silver plate synergizing with a nanosilver sol was prepared as a substrate for SERS to detect potassium hydrogen phthalate (PHP), a hydrolysate of a PAE plasticizer. Detection conditions, such as pH values, drying times, and hydrolysate interference, were optimized. The working curve was well fitted with a linear parameter R of 0.9994, and the minimum detection limit was evaluated as 10 mol/L. Furthermore, the detection accuracy was supported by five edible oil samples. Therefore, using SERS technology to detect PHP is expected to provide an avenue for PAE plasticizer detection in oils and fats, and it features promising potential applications in food safety.

Reduction mammaplasty is often performed to alleviate symptoms of macromastia or for symmetry after a lumpectomy in the contra-lateral breast. Abnormal pathology including breast cancer can be incidentally found in reduction mammaplasty specimens, but there is no consensus on risk factors or detection rates. This study aimed to elucidate the incidence of malignant and high-risk pathology findings in patients undergoing breast reduction in a Canadian context.

Nociception is the process by which sensory neurons detect and encode potentially harmful environmental stimuli to generate behavioral responses. Nociceptor neurons exhibit plasticity in which their sensitivity to noxious stimuli and subsequent ability to drive behavior may be altered by environmental conditions, injury, infection, and inflammation. In some cases, nociceptor sensitization requires regulated changes in gene expression, and recent studies have indicated roles for post-transcriptional mechanisms in regulating these changes as an aspect of nociceptor plasticity.

Background: Contrary to the common belief, the most commonly used laboratory C57BL/6J mouse inbred strain presents a distinctive genetic and phenotypic variability, and for several traits, the genotype-phenotype link remains still unknown. Recently, we characterized the most important stroke survival factor such as brain collateral plasticity in 2 brain ischemia C57BL/6J mouse models (bilateral common carotid artery stenosis and middle cerebral artery occlusion) and observed a Mendelian-like fashion of inheritance of the posterior communicating artery (PcomA) patency. Interestingly, a copy number variant (CNV) spanning locus was reported to segregate in an analogous Mendelian-like pattern in the C57BL/6J colonies of the Jackson Laboratory.

Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the validity of near-infrared light reflection for detecting different depths of proximal caries in posterior teeth and to compare it with commonly used clinical oral examinations and bitewing radiography images.
Methods: Twenty-six patients with a total of 516 proximal surfaces were included in this study. The ground truth of the proximal caries was determined through a consensus reached by two experienced dentists after an intraoral examination assisted by bitewing radiographs.
