Non-thermo-optical treatments (NTO), characterized by low heat and non-damaging attributes, show promise as postharvest technologies. We hypothesize that NTO, specifically ultraviolet-C (UV-C) and intense pulsed light (IPL), can positively impact preserving fresh goji berry quality during storage in multiple aspects. The findings indicated that UV-C and IPL irradiations delayed the senescence process in postharvest goji berries.

The inherent short lifespan of Zea mays (maize, corn) pollen hinders crop improvement and challenges the hybrid seed production required to produce food, fuel, and feed. Decades of scientific effort on maize pollen storage technology have been unable to deliver a widely accessible protocol that works for liters of pollen at a hybrid seed production scale. Here we show how suppressing the pollen cellular respiration rate through refrigeration and optimizing gas exchange within the storage environment are the critical combination of factors for maintaining pollen viability in storage.

Context: Public health surveillance plays a crucial role in evaluating disease risk and providing timely evidence to policymakers and the public. However, surveillance of many occupational diseases is limited by existing surveillance infrastructure, which is heavily dependent on laboratory tests.
Objective: The present pilot study compared case data for 3 occupational lung diseases (ie, silicosis, asbestosis, and farmer's lung disease) from electronic case reports (eCR) with existing hospital discharge data in the state of Wisconsin to see if eCR-which sends health records directly from clinics when specific criteria are met-provided previously undetected cases of these reportable diseases.

Aerosolized medications are common practice for mechanically ventilated pediatric patients. Infants often receive nebulized medications via hand ventilation using an anesthesia bag, but evidence on optimal aerosol delivery with this method is limited. For this study, various configurations of the Mapleson breathing circuit were tested to optimize albuterol delivery to a simulated pediatric model.
