NADPH Oxidases: Redox Regulation of Cell Homeostasis & Disease.

Physiol Rev

January 2025

Pittsburgh Heart, Lung, Blood and Vascular Medicine Institute, University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA, 15261.

The redox signaling network in mammals has garnered enormous interest and taken on major biological significance in recent years as the scope of NADPH oxidases (NOXs) as regulators of physiological signaling and cellular degeneration has grown exponentially. All NOX subtypes have in common the capacity to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS) superoxide anion (O) and/or hydrogen peroxide (HO). A baseline, normal level of ROS formation supports a wide range of processes under physiological conditions.

Probiotic sour beer (PRO) fermented with Lpc-37 is a novel beverage option, which may potentially offer health benefits. In this study, the effects of PRO are evaluated on the inflammatory, immunity, lipid profile, and gut microbiome of consumers in a 5-week, participant-blinded, randomized-controlled within-subject crossover study. Twenty-one healthy male participants consumed 330 mL of PRO and normal sour beer (CON) daily for 2 weeks each with a 1 week of washout.

The urban environment impacts residents' health and well-being in many ways. Environmental benefits and risks may be interactively and inequitably distributed across different populations in cities, and these patterns may change over time. Here, we assess the spatial distribution of environmental risks and benefits in pairs, considering synergies and trade-offs, in an illustrative metropolitan area (Metro Vancouver) in Canada in the years 2006 and 2016.

Optimized vector for functional expression of the human bitter taste receptor TAS2R14 in HEK293 cells.

Protein Expr Purif

March 2025

Centre des Sciences Du Goût et de l'Alimentation, CNRS, INRAE, Institut Agro, Université de Bourgogne, F-21000, France. Electronic address:

Bitter is one of the five basic taste qualities, along with salty, sour, sweet and umami, used by mammals to access the quality of their food and orient their eating behaviour. Bitter taste detection prevents the ingestion of food potentially contaminated by bitter-tasting toxins. Bitter taste perception is mediated by a family of G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) called TAS2Rs.

Exploring the dynamic characteristic of typical kombucha induced by symbiotic microbiota succession from four Chinese regions: A comprehensive analytical framework.

Food Res Int

December 2024

College of Food Science and Engineering, Northwest A&F University, Yangling, Shaanxi 712100, China; Laboratory of Quality & Safety Risk Assessment for Agro-products (Yangling), Ministry of Agriculture, Yangling, Shaanxi 712100, China. Electronic address:

To investigate the microbial diversities and dynamic quality properties of kombucha, the successional changes with different periods from four regions were comprehensively characterized and compared. A total of 197 indigenous yeast and bacterial strains were isolated, involving Gluconobacter, Komagataeibacter, Starmerella and Zygosaccharomyces spp. The successional dynamics of the kombucha communities in different regions were evaluated.
