The C-H functionalization strategy provides access to valuable molecules that previously required convoluted synthetic attempts. Dual C-H unsymmetrical functionalization, with a single bifunctional reagent, is an effective tactic. Propargyl alcohols (PAs), despite containing a reactive C≡C bond, have not been explored as building blocks via oxidative cleavage. Annulations via C-H activation are a versatile and synthetically attractive strategy. We disclose PA as a new bifunctional reagent for unsymmetrical dual C-H functionalization of biphenylamine for regioselectively annulated outcomes. On tuning the conditions, the annulation bifurcated towards an unusual dual oxidative cyclization. This method accommodates a wide range of PAs and showcases late-stage diversification of some natural products.

Article Synopsis
  • CO hydrogenation has been identified as a more sustainable and efficient alternative to methanol in the side-chain alkylation of 4-methylpyridine (MEPY) using a ZnZrO/CsX tandem catalyst, achieving a conversion rate of 19.6%.
  • This new method results in 82% selectivity for 4-ethylpyridine (ETPY) and demonstrates 6.5 times greater activity compared to traditional methanol-mediated processes.
  • The success of this catalytic process is attributed to the dual functionality of the catalyst components, facilitating both CO hydrogenation and the activation of C-H and C-C bonds, with CHO* species acting as the crucial intermediate.

Proton Transfer Anionic Polymerization of Methyl Methacrylate with Ligands for Dual Control of Molecular Weight and Tacticity.

Dual control of the molecular weight and tacticity in proton transfer anionic polymerization (PTAP) of methyl methacrylate (MMA) was investigated by using various ligands in the presence of a bulky potassium base catalyst and an organic compound with a weakly acidic C-H bond as dormant species in toluene at 0 °C. The tacticity of the resulting poly(MMA) (PMMA) produced without ligands was nearly atactic (// = 22/54/24). However, the use of 18-crown-6 as a ligand afforded predominantly syndiotactic PMMA ( ≈ 58%), whereas the use of chiral bis(oxazoline) ligands gave slightly isotactic-rich PMMA ( ≈ 32%).

Nutrient recovery from aquaculture sludge is vital for promoting hydroponic plant growth and achieving near-zero solid waste discharge in aquaponic systems. Modified biological aerated filters (MBAFs) are promising because of the dual capabilities of aquaculture sludge collection and aerobic mineralization. However, the bioconversion kinetics, which is indirectly related to the packed media, need to be improved.

Unveiling the Centrosymmetric Effect in the Design of Narrowband Fluorescent Emitters: From Single to Double Difluoroboron Cores.

Narrowband fluorescent emitters are receiving significant attention due to the great potential for creating ultrahigh-definition organic light-emitting diode displays (UHD-OLED). Unveiling innovative mechanisms to design new high-performance narrowband fluorescent emitters is a concerted endeavor in both academic and industrial circles. Theoretical calculations reveal that the centrosymmetric dianilido-bipyridine boron difluoride framework (-DAPBF) exhibits significantly reduced structural relaxation compared to previously reported asymmetric structures with monofluoroboron cores, creating new opportunities for the development of narrowband fluorescent emitters.

This paper describes a ferric nitrene/photoredox dual-catalyzed anti-Markovnikov ring-opening of epoxides under neutral conditions for providing α-substituted acetophenones. A DFT-based calculation supported the reaction regioselectivity. The catalytic system could also be applied to the formation of C-O and C-N bonds nucleophilic functionalization of benzylic C-H bonds.
