Hydrophilic interaction chromatography (HILIC)-type sorbents were newly developed for the solid-phase extraction (SPE) of polar compounds. Two methacrylate-base resins with different cross-linking monomers and pore properties were synthesized, and three polyethyleneimines (PEIs) with different molecular weights were modified onto each base resin. In both cases, PEIs with a molecular weight of 10,000 (PEI-10,000) exhibited the highest adsorption properties for polar compounds (uracil, uridine, adenosine, cytidine, and guanosine). To control the water-enriched layer at the surface of the PEI-10,000-modified sorbents, the additive amount of PEI-10,000 in the modified reaction was also optimized. When 10 times the amount of PEI-10,000 to each base resin was added, an improvement in adsorption property was observed. Moreover, the use of a nonaqueous sample solution (100% acetonitrile) during the sample loading process drastically improved adsorption, especially for uracil (about 80%) and adenosine (100%). These results indicate that the formation of a strong water-enriched layer at the surface of sorbents with an effective expression of hydrophilic interaction was an important factor in the adsorption properties of polar compounds in HILIC mode-SPE.

They serve as an ideal platform for studying the physical and chemical properties of sp carbon frameworks in the one-dimensional limit and also provide a fertile playground to explore magnetism in graphenic nanostructures due to their zigzag edge topology. While higher acenes up to tridecacene have been successfully generated by means of on-surface synthesis, it is imperative to extend their synthesis toward even longer homologues to comprehensively understand the evolution of their electronic ground state.

Increased industrial offshore activities in northern waters raise the question of impact of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on key Arctic marine species. One of these is the ecologically important polar cod (Boreogadus saida), which is the primary food source for Arctic marine mammals and seabirds. Spinal cord injury (SCI) represents a severe type of central nervous system damage, with no effective treatment currently available, partly due to neuronal ferroptosis and subsequent neuroinflammation. Punicalagin, an anti-inflammatory compound extracted from pomegranate peel, has exhibited therapeutic potential for inflammatory diseases. In this study, we present evidence that punicalagin facilitates the recovery of neurological function following SCI by mitigating neuronal ferroptosis.

In this work, we reexamine the Dailey-Townes model by systematically investigating the electric field gradient (EFG) in various chlorine compounds, dihalogens, and the uranyl ion (). Through the use of relativistic molecular calculations and projection analysis, we decompose the EFG expectation value in terms of atomic reference orbitals. We show how the Dailey-Townes model can be seen as an approximation to our projection analysis.
