Previous reports have confirmed that crude saponins (ginsenosides) in Panax ginseng have a preventive effect on chemotherapy-induced intestinal injury. However, the protective effects and possible mechanisms of ginsenoside Re (G-Re, a maker saponin in ginseng) against chemotherapy-induced intestinal damage have not been thoroughly studied. In this work, a series of experiments and on the intestinal toxicity caused by cisplatin have been designed to verify the improvement effect of G-Re, focusing on the levels of Wnt3a and [Formula: see text]-catenin. Mice were intragastric with G-Re for 10 days, and intestinal injury was induced by intraperitoneal administration of cisplatin at a dose of 20 mg/kg. Histopathology, gastrointestinal digestive enzyme activities, inflammatory cytokines, and oxidative status were evaluated to investigate the protective effect. Furthermore, in IEC-6 cells, G-Re statistically reverses cisplatin-induced oxidative damage and cytotoxicity. The TUNEL and Hoechst 33258 staining demonstrated that G-Re possesses protective effects in cisplatin-induced apoptosis. Additionally, pretreatment with G-Re significantly alleviated the apoptosis via inhibition of over-expressions of B-associated X (Bax), as well as the caspase family members, such as caspase 3 and 9, respectively, and . Notably, western blotting results showed that G-Re treatment decreased Wnt3a, Glycogen synthase kinase [Formula: see text] (GSK-[Formula: see text]), and [Formula: see text]-catenin expression, suggesting that nuclear accumulation of [Formula: see text]-catenin was attenuated, thereby inhibiting the activation of GSK-[Formula: see text]-dependent Wnt/[Formula: see text]-catenin signaling, which was consistent with our expected results. Therefore, the above evidence suggested that G-Re may be a candidate drug for the treatment of intestinal injury.

Sepsis is a systemic inflammatory response to infection, and its occurrence is associated with a poor prognosis in the context of multiorgan dysfunction syndrome (MODS). Although there are several animal models for the study of its etiology, the cecal ligation and puncture (CLP) model has been considered the "Gold standard" because it shows a high degree of similarity to the progression of human sepsis. Currently, it is one of the most frequently chosen options to search for therapeutic alternatives to diminish the progression and organ damage induced by sepsis.

While internal hernias are rare in the paediatric population, it should be considered as a cause for an acute abdomen following blunt trauma. Internal hernias represent a surgical emergency that requires prompt recognition due to the high risk of strangulation and ischaemia of affected bowel loops. The case of a transomental hernia (TOH) is described in a young girl.

Ophiopogonis japonicus is a famous medicinal plant in China with a long history of medicinal and food origin. It contains various chemical components, such as polysaccharides, steroidal saponins, alkaloids, flavonoids, etc. According to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) theory, it has the efficacy of moistening the lungs and nourishing the yin, benefiting the stomach by generating fluids, and clearing the heart to get rid of vexation.

2-Amino-3-methylimidazole [4,5-] quinoline (IQ) is a kind of heterocyclic amine (HCAs) with high carcinogenicity in hot processed meat. Rutin (Ru) is a flavonoid compound with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. However, whether Ru is scatheless under IQ-stimulated potential unhealthy conditions, especially liver function, in vivo, is unknown.

Background/objectives: With the improvement of living standards, alcoholic liver disease caused by long-term drinking has been a common multiple disease. Probiotic interventions may help mitigate liver damage caused by alcohol intake, but the mechanisms need more investigation.
Methods: This study involved 70 long-term alcohol drinkers (18-65 years old, alcohol consumption ≥20 g/day, lasting for more than one year) who were randomly assigned to either the BC99 group or the placebo group.
