Pathological diagnosis of central nervous system tumours in adults: what's new?

Pathology

December 2024

Department of Pathology, Amsterdam University Medical Centers/VUmc, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; Princess Máxima Center for Pediatric Oncology, Utrecht, The Netherlands.

In the course of the last decade, the pathological diagnosis of many tumours of the central nervous system (CNS) has transitioned from a purely histological to a combined histological and molecular approach, resulting in a more precise 'histomolecular diagnosis'. Unfortunately, translation of this refinement in CNS tumour diagnostics into more effective treatment strategies is lagging behind. There is hope though that incorporating the assessment of predictive markers in the pathological evaluation of CNS tumours will help to improve this situation.

A neurocomputational account of multi-line electronic gambling machines.

Trends Cogn Sci

January 2025

Department of Psychology, Biological Psychology, University of Cologne, Cologne, Germany. Electronic address:

Multi-line electronic gambling machines (EGMs) are strongly associated with problem gambling. Dopamine (DA) plays a central role in substance-use disorders, which share clinical and behavioral features with disordered gambling. The structural design features of multi-line EGMs likely lead to the elicitation of various dopaminergic effects within their nested anticipation-outcome structure.

Weight loss therapy and addiction: increased risk after bariatric surgery but reduced risk with GLP-1 receptor agonists.

Diabetes Metab

January 2025

Division of Diabetes, Nutrition and Metabolic Disorders, CHU Liège, Liège, Belgium; Division of Clinical Pharmacology, Centre for Interdisciplinary Research on Medicines (CIRM), Liège University, Liège, Belgium. Electronic address:

Background: Obesity is an increasing public health problem because of its high prevalence and associated morbidity and mortality. Two weight-loss strategies are currently used, either bariatric surgery or pharmacological therapy with glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists (GLP-1RAs). Preclinical studies in rodents suggested an increased risk of additive disorders after bariatric surgery contrasting with a reduced risk with GLP-1RAs.

CDK1 inhibitor RO-3306 enhances BTKi potency in diffuse large B-cell lymphoma by suppressing JAK2/STAT3 signaling.

Int J Biol Macromol

January 2025

Department of Hematology, The Affiliated Huaian No.1 People's Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Huaian 223300, Jiangsu Province, PR China; Key Laboratory of Hematology of Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing 210029, Jiangsu Province, PR China. Electronic address:

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is the most common type of lymphoma in adults, which characterized by a high degree of heterogeneity in terms of clinical presentation, molecular phenotype, and genetic features. However, approximately 30 %-40 % of patients are refractory to standard chemotherapy, and their prognosis is poor. The emergence of small-molecule inhibitors, such as Bruton's tyrosine kinase inhibitors (BTKi), has greatly improved the treatment of DLBCL; however, drug resistance associated with small-molecule inhibitors has greatly limited their clinical application.

Extension of shelf-life of mangoes using PLA-cardanol-amine functionalized graphene active films.

Int J Biol Macromol

January 2025

Food Packaging Technology Department, CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute, Mysuru, India; Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR), Ghaziabad, Uttar Pradesh 201002, India. Electronic address:

Multifunctional PLA films were fabricated through the solution casting method by incorporating cardanol oil (CA) and amine-functionalized graphene (AFG). The effect of the CA, and AFG on the structural, mechanical, thermal, thermo-mechanical and antioxidant properties of PLA films were investigated. FTIR analysis of PLA-CA films showed distinct peak positions at 1590 cm corresponding to the aromatic CC bonds of CA, showing that CA is compatible with the PLA.
