We spend most of our time indoors; however, little is known about the effects of exposure to aerosol particles indoors. We aimed to determine differences in relative toxicity and physicochemical properties of PM collected simultaneously indoors (PM ) and outdoors (PM ) in 15 occupied homes in southern Sweden. Collected particles were extracted from filters, pooled (indoor and outdoor separately), and characterized for chemical composition and endotoxins before being tested for toxicity in mice via intratracheal instillation. Various endpoints including lung inflammation, genotoxicity, and acute-phase response in lung and liver were assessed 1, 3, and 28 days post-exposure. Chemical composition of particles used in toxicological assessment was compared to particles analyzed without extraction. Time-resolved particle mass and number concentrations were monitored. PM showed higher relative concentrations (μg mg ) of metals, PAHs, and endotoxins compared to PM . These differences may be linked to PM causing significantly higher lung inflammation and lung acute-phase response 1 day post-exposure compared to PM and vehicle controls, respectively. None of the tested materials caused genotoxicity. PM displayed higher relative toxicity than PM under the studied conditions, that is, wintertime with reduced air exchange rates, high influence of indoor sources, and relatively low outdoor concentrations of PM. Reducing PM exposure requires reduction of both infiltration from outdoors and indoor-generated particles.

UV-Aged Nanoplastics Increase Mercury Toxicity in a Marine Copepod under Multigenerational Exposure: A Carrier Role.

Environ Sci Technol

January 2025

Fujian Provincial Key Laboratory for Coastal Ecology and Environmental Studies/College of the Environment & Ecology, Xiamen University, Xiamen 361102, China.

Aged plastics possess diverse interactive properties with metals compared to pristine ones. However, the role of aging for nanoplastics (NPs) in being a carrier of mercury (Hg), a common marine environmental pollutant, and their combined effects remain unclear. This study investigated the carrier effect of ultraviolet-aged NPs on Hg and the ensuing toxicity in a marine copepod under a multigenerational scenario.

Objective: Concerns over the increasing number of obese individuals and the associated health risks have prompted therapeutic option explorations. Similarly, this study aimed to establish fruit extract (SCFE) anti-adipogenic attributes in 3T3-L1 cells.

Methods: The polyphenolic compounds in SCFE were identified with Reverse phase-high performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC).

Organic-inorganic hybrid ferroelectric compounds of the halobismuthate family have emerged as a focal point of research owing to their reduced toxicity and distinctive optical characteristics. This study presents a novel ammonium hybrid perovskite, [BPMBDMA]·[Bi2Br9], which exhibits both ferro- and piezoelectric properties and crystallizes in the polar noncentrosymmetric 2 space group. The nonlinear optical (NLO) activity of [BPMBDMA]·[Bi2Br9] was corroborated through second harmonic generation measurements evidencing its noncentrosymmetric structure, which was further substantiated by piezoresponse force microscopy analyses.

Background: Agonistic monoclonal antibodies targeting 4-1BB/CD137 have shown preclinical promise, but their clinical development has been limited by severe liver toxicity or limited efficacy. Therefore, a safe and efficient immunostimulatory molecule is urgently needed for cancer immunotherapy.

Methods: A novel anti-MSLN×4-1BB bispecific antibody (bsAb) was generated via antibody engineering, and its affinity and activity were detected via enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), flow cytometry, and T-cell activation and luciferase reporter assays.
