Objectives: The indication for removal of asymptomatic fully impacted third molars is still controversial. In this study, radiological and histological investigation of the dental follicle of asymptomatic impacted mandibular third molars was performed, aiming to provide a reference for clinical prophylactic extraction of these teeth.

Methods: Patients with impacted mandibular third molars were included and the maximum width of the dental follicle around the crown was measured in horizontal, sagittal and coronal sections by cone beam computed tomography. The dental follicles were stained with haematoxylin-eosin, analysed by a pathologist and classified as normal, inflammatory or cystic. A Chi-squared test was used to analyse the association of the incidence of inflammation and cysts with the clinical variables of the impacted mandibular third molars.

Results: Thirty-seven samples were normal dental follicles; 52 samples showed inflammatory infiltration with an incidence of 57.14%; 2 samples with a maximum dental follicle width of 2-3 mm were diagnosed as odontogenic cysts, and the incidence was 2.20%. There was no significant difference in the incidence of inflammatory and cystic dental follicles between males and females, or between different age groups (P > 0.05). With an increase of the maximum width of the dental follicle, there was a rise in the incidence and degree of infiltration of chronic nonspecific inflammation.

Conclusion: Asymptomatic impacted mandibular third molars tend to be extracted, especially for teeth with a 2-3 mm maximum width of the dental follicle on radiological examination.

Extracellular vesicles derived from dental follicle stem cells regulate tooth eruption by inhibiting osteoclast differentiation.

Tooth eruption as a crucial part in tooth development and regeneration is accompanied by ongoing osteogenesis and osteoclast activity. The dental follicle (DF) surrounding the developing tooth harbors dental follicle stem cells (DFSCs) which play a crucial role in maintaining bone remodeling. However, the mechanisms through which they regulate the balance between osteogenesis and osteoclast activity during tooth eruption remain poorly understood.

Background Aims: The clinical translation of mesenchymal stromal cell secretome (MSC-S) has been challenging owing to a lack of appropriate methods in downstream processing. Dialysis is an age-old method of protein purification by the exchange of small molecules through a semi-permeable membrane. In this study, we investigated the potential of three forms of umbilical cord-derived MSC secretome (UC-MSC-S)-native (S), dialyzed (DS), and lyophilized (LDS)-for wound healing applications.

Periodontal disease is a major contributor to tooth loss worldwide in adults. Particularly, periodontal bone defect is a common clinical condition, yet current therapeutic strategies exhibit limited effectiveness. Recently, natural bone graft materials have attracted considerable interest for enhancing bone defect repair due to their superior biocompatibility and osteogenic capabilities.

Background: Nationally representative long-term data on caries in the primary dentition are rare but essential for determining the need for prevention and treatment. This research assessed the prevalence and trends of dental caries in 3-year-old children across Germany, with national data analyzed and compared with the corresponding data for 6-7-year-olds.

Methods: Data were extracted from the most recent German National Oral Health Survey in 2016.
